The 100,000 yen could have been cummulative.

Teenagers may have a lot of money, but a fifth grader? I think swij is right, it`s probably cumulative. Still, the botched reporting would warrant a reprimand, not really even the principal`s job, in my opinion. Not something to kill yourself over.

another one bites

What in the heck is a fifth grader doing with 100000 yen? Is that a typo?

Weak, killing yourself is the easy way out, why is it considered an option in Japan? This entire thing is out of hand?!

no that was a principal with regards to the 1000's of students who wouldn't be able to graduate for finding they didn't do enough subjects.

is getting way out of hand, and society just stands by, holding their polite little hands.

Nobody is going to help these shame-ridden, weak, helpless school 'leaders' ... and getting any psych counseling is tantamount to killing yourself in this society.

From a western perspective, folks just DON'T CARE about one another here ... in other words, appearances, pride and 'dignity' count for far more than humanity.

So this rash of recent principal sucides WILL continue. So sad.

Umm...folks. Reread the story.

It reads, "During the past year at the school, eight fifth-graders had extorted some 100,000 yen from a female classmate..."

The student wasn't walking around with 100,000 yen in her pocket. It was extorted from her over the space of a year by a group of kids who basically got the unofficial go-ahead to extort by the school's unwillingness to treat the matter seriously. Chalk another one up to a school system that refuses to hold bullies accountable.

Suppression = Oppression = Depression

How wonderful this society is...

Look at all those happy faces on the morning trains.

No wonder kids go twisted and principles do harakiri.

Did the kids give the money back? If not why not!? It only seems fit that the parents of the BRAT KIDS must pay for this hidious and stupid act.

Doesn't anyone have balls to stand up for them self in Japan. I got issue doesn't mean you have to kill yourself. Man there too many things in life to see and do. You where not made to fail once and off yourself. You where made to endure life's hardships and happyness. Pain is apart of life. Struggle is apart of life.

It's not mentioned in this story, but the girl who was bullied into forking over 100,000 yen committed suicide. I think that was the motive for the princial's subsequent suicide.

But does it strike anyone else here that in the school system's efforts to convince children than taking their own lives is not the right answer to problems and that life is a precious gift, these principals who kepp offing themselves might be sending a bit of a mixed message? Hard for the kids to develop a healthy attitude against suicide when their elders are knocking themselves off.
