Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed Saturday on seeking a "mutually acceptable resolution" to a territorial dispute

In other words they agreed on nothing but no doubt spend lots of tax money on the finest transportation, the finest hotels and the finest food to get nothing accomplished.

Better get arbitration from UN Court

Japan will never do that because Japan would lose just about every territorial dispute it has right now with U.N. arbitration. It would even lose some territory not in dispute if the U.N. stepped in! Japan wants U.N. arbitration like a bank robber wants help from the police!

The Russian side will only give up two of the four and that would only be some years down the road after literally mining the islands of as much of their natural resources as possible-using Russian companies.
The Japanese side demands all four islands. Not gonna happen til Russia gets all the valuables and then they will still offer only Shikotan and the Habomai islets for geopolitical purposes. The only way for Japan to get Kunashiri and Etorofu back would be to fight for them and that ain`t gonna happen.

What are you talking about Zorro?

Its my understanding Japan actually wants to propose the takeshima/dokto incident to the UN. South Korea refuses. Same with Russia.

Now, as for the Sensaku islands, its my understanding China doesn't even pursue them through the UN because it believes the UN is corrupt from Japanese influence, or something like that.

I could be wrong about that China stance.

Nevertheless, Japan would want UN arbitration bad, so I dont know what you're talking about.

3 strikes your out! I think you got all that wrong.
In September 1954, Japan protested and suggested arbitration action at the International Court of Justice, but the offer was fiercely rejected by South Korea.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dokdo

Not the same with Russia because Japan signed the 1953 San Francisco treaty removing any future claim on those islands. its Russias that offered the 2 smallest and closest Islands to Japan. Legally Japan could not win.

Now, as for the Sensaku islands, its my understanding China doesn't even pursue them through the UN because it believes the UN is corrupt from Japanese influence, or something like that.

I could be wrong about that China stance.

Yes you are wrong. With the Sentaku islands its very arguable as to who would win. I doubt Japan would take it to the UN because they could very well lose same with China.

I don't think so.

Takeshima was forcibly taken by Korea with the declaration of Rhee Line.

The Northern territories were taken by Russia and the Kuriles, by definition from the previous accords with Russia does not include the 4 islands in question.

In case of terra nullius like that of Senkaku, Japan has established the exercise of effective control, apparent display of soverignty, intention to acquire soverignty, and continuos and peaceful display which takes precendence over proximity and ancient history claims. Furthermore, let us not forget the fact that China started to claim the Senkaku after the discovery of natural resources. How convenient.

In any case, Japan would love to settle all of this via International Court of Justice.

So again, you are wrong.

There is no such thing as Takeshima, that is a recent made up name. The facts are clear before the whole international community, and no one educated of informed on the issue of DOKDO ( the real name) takes Japan's outlandish claim seriously. Japan has become more interested in trying to invade Dokdo because of its richness in natural resources. HOW CONVENIENT! Japan's own maps used for their obviously disproven argument even show Dokdo is Korea's.

Also this is the greatest proof that Japan is the most hostile nation in Asia. North Korea doesn't attempt invasions of other countries sovereign land, but Japan does. Roh was right to threat opening fire on Japanese survey boats if they attempted to come near Dokdo. For Japan to even consider such a thing is equal to invasion of another sovereign country and will not be tollerated. So given who Japan is clearly hostile, and lies what argument do you have?

Moderator: Readers, back on topic please. This thread is about the Northern Territories issue with Russia, not Takeshima/Dokdo.
