Wii = the gamer's system

The N64 seemed hopelessly outdated (I thought it would fail) when it came out = but it was a success on gameplay. =People (mostly young kids) enjoyed the system and its' games and enjoyed playing the N64 with others.

The Wii is like a N64 on steroids. = Gameplay in spades.

I see more interest in the Wii than anything else and there are some good games available. =This system will outsell the PS3 its' first year and maybe even outsell X360's first year of sales. The Wii may eventually sell better than both systems together. People will buy as many Wiis as Nintendo can make this Christmas season.

And the winner is...

Our focus has been on how we could make those who had not been interested in TV games so far become interested.
Thats a pretty stupid goal, you can't fundimentally change the nature of people just by making a new console. Unless what he means is that they are targeting children who have just come into the age of being interested in gaming.

I got a Wii last week, and have caught my wife playing it late at night.

Was she for or against you buying it in the beginning?

I disagree. If you make a new console that goes by a different philosophy, you can attract a different clientele.

The fact is, Nintendo is wisely allowing Sony and Microsoft slug it out over pure bleeding-edge horsepower, a very expensive endeavor which does nothing at all to change the game-playing experience. Nintendo stepped back and instead concentrated on creating a completely new input philosophy, one which might actually get gamers' butts up off the couch. It's actually a step toward virtual reality, minus the goggles. Instead of punching buttons to swing a golf club, swing the controller!

It's still just another video game, but at least Nintendo brought something truly new to the table.

striking the arguement:

You are obviously not married. =Never question your wife's happiness. -Your life will only be bitter.

If she wants to play with her (your) Wii in the wee hours of night -let her.

lol...We "had no choice."
The two older kids had been saving their allowance for 5 months and were going to use their "otoshi dama" to make up the rest. They bought a DS with their own money, we tend to let them decide how to spend their money themselves, but we do limit how much time they spend on games.

For good or bad, our kids needed a DS because darn near every other kid at school had one and the kids would spend their recess talking about DS games and then meet after school to try each other's games. The 5 kids at school that don't have a DS are at a real social disadvantage and get left out of being invited to their friends houses. They are pariah.

will be the ruination of the people. They need circuity that kills the lowest and highest scorers or all will be lost for the future

I think Nintendo has always had "funner" games in mind. But I just don't think that you can really get people who are not interested in video games interested by a different console. Even if it is the coolest best virtual reality, people who prefer reality will always do so. In my opinion.
But I could be wrong, its just a feeling.

I am loathe to admit that I succumbed to the same social pressures with my kids.

I take it you are not a gamer; But then, neither am I. Far be it for I to question others' pursuits, however.

BTW: By the way - you have mis-spelled "circuity."

With respect to Nintendo Co. Present Iwata's statement vis-a-vis the competition: Good on him! Don't acknowledge them and they don't exist!

3,
I agree with Takuan. These games are an abomination that are hurting families and huge contributors to an obese generation of kids.
However, by NOT giving them a PSP or Nintendo DS, you put your kids in the unenviable position of being on the outside and in Japanese society, well...ouch.
One of my very closest friends is a man to truly be admired. He's well read, thoughtful, articulate and kind.
His family survives on a very meager living but he doesn't take on a second job because he feels that it is more important to spend time with his family than to "keep of with the Jones'" or to live with a lot of unnecessary materialistic luxuries.
I commend him for that but at the same time, I know (his wife talking to my wife) that his oldest is often teased for NOT owning a Nintendo DS and for not knowing about the latest and coolest games. When he is allowed to borrow a DS from one of the other kids, obviously he sucks, and therefore is the subject of more teasing.
If he goes to another kid's house and the kids play PS or X-box, he is on the outside because he doesn't know how to play.
So, I think it's like Pandora's box. They (the video games) are an abomination but they are here to stay and as much as I admire my friend for his noble approach to life and fatherhood, my kid has a DS.

I've gotta agree with takuan about these games, but I too, like Taka, gave in and bought won for my daughter, Pretty much for the same reasons. The one thing that we have been successful with is setting a time limit on how long she can play.(40 minutes a day) True, I don't know what she is doing at her friends' houses. I don't know how long she plays her DS there, but when I ask her she usually says that she has used up her time for the day. One good thing about her DS is that it has an English grammar and spelling cassette. (She is allowed to use that as much as she wants.) Her English spelling and grammar have jumped considerably since she got the DS. Also, luckily, she loves to play outside and will usually drop the game at the chance to play outside, even if it is with her father or mother.
BTW, Taka, I admire your friend's stance about spending time with his family. It is one of the things that I have been able to do because of my job here in Japan(much more than my brother or brothers-in-law at home).
