Local intelligence gathering involes hiring a reviewer from the Lonely Planet to see if the future deployment site has (1). a convenience store that sells shake-bento and Sankei sports within a 1km radius, (2) a school auditorium that has a 5.1 surround sound system and a plasma screen tv to host the annual regimental bounenkai, (3) Just in case a scrutiny panel from honchou arrives, a redlight district within a cofortable walking distance from camp is present.
Oh yeah and there's the factor as to whether friendly foreign troops are nearby to protect our boys and girls.

at the helm of George Bush and Shinzo Abe.
...The unit, which is likely to have about 600 members, is expected to have its first-ever human intelligence (humint) corps to engage in gathering information from local people when dispatched abroad, the sources said.
The 70-strong corps, tentatively called the "Overseas Intelligence Corps," is expected to secure "cooperatives" abroad and conduct other high-level intelligence activities...
...Meanwhile, the team of intelligence specialists to be created at the end of fiscal 2009 will be selected from GSDF members who excel in foreign languages, communications and data processing, and will go through special training...Hmmm... dont` look like the gov is taking these very seriousli. For the second economy of the world, these agency looks very small, green and formed whit "square, narrow minded soldiers", using envelops whit yens for geting "cooperation".
And the hawks on the LDP want nukes!?
Sounds like a blind man buying a gun and saying "now I can defend miself!!!".

This is good. It is important in todays environment to keep informed on potential adversaries such as North Korea and even the Chinese.
You can be assured that the Chinese secret services conduct espionage on the Japanese.

Chinese espionage is everywhere. American F-16 fighter jet blueprints were stolen by Chinese students and circulated to Beijing where it was to develop advanced Chinese fighter planes. Chinese hackers are reported constantly on the news attempting to break into military servers.
Central Intelligence Agencies are needed globally to protect national interests, but mainly to have an upper hand against rival nations.
