When we lived in Japan, I always tried to buy the milk that was near its due date and had steep discounts. The milk was fine and I often used it a week or even 10 days after the throw away date.

This is much more than an issue of the date on the carton. If the customer is less trhan "GOD" does that mean that it is ok to sell food that has been dropped,is spoilt, feculent or handled by undesirable people.
I wonder if they feed their children food that has expired?
Or how about their corporate customers?? "That cake is made from expired milk, don't give it to those people their are important.
"Toshi didn't wash his hands after deficating, don't give that cake to the boss, sell it to that family."

No. Not at all. Japan is a country of "fur coat and no knickers." What you see is not the real thing. Its all about appearance, and masks. Sometime, as in this case, the maek slips to reveal the awful truth. Japanese "milk" is not really milk to begin with. Proper milk has a shelf life of only a few days. Japanese "milk" lasts for weeks in my fridge. If you look at the writing on the packaging, it clearly states that "100% milk was used in the making of this product." It is not real milk to begin with.
However, that is no excuse for the actions of Fujiya Company.
The President should go to jail, instead of making a typical "apology" which like all such apologies, is from the teeth out. I for one will never darken the doors of a Fujiya`s shops or restaurants again. Peko Chan in your cute New Year kimono - your days are numbered. Fujiya Company sucks, big time.
Same crap Snow Brand tried to pull a few years ago, they never recovered from the fallout.
Surprised no one got 0-157 poisoning from this....

Sure they shouldn't have done it, but in actual fact nobody seems to have been poisoned as a result.
As for the fallout - same old story, negligent management, mock resignation, crocodile tears, public self-flagellation etc.

WHAT!? I though it was only foreign companies/countries which had problems with their food/drink. How could this be?! My image of perfect japan has now been shattered.

Fujiya's case is nothing new...it does happen in Japan from time to time...they will survive...get support from financial
and commerical institutes...may even change the company name. so why so much fuss by media when it is quite acceptable
by Japanese. Things would have been terrible had it been a foreign product.

Why harp on a little beyond the expiry date?

Because the CUSTOMER IS GOD.
When it is OK to cheat GOD or give GOD inferior products there is no limit to what a company will do. The milk is a little old OK, there is a little dirt on the machine OK, there is sewage leaking into the product OK !!
Standards have to start somewhere.
Is this another crack in the facad of Japanese superiority in all things?

You are exactly right!!! Standards have to start somewhere. We can't just say, well, no one got sick from it! Fujiya has the responsibility to serve safe products to the public.

I 100% agree with some14some.
And ... the Pres will appear on TV and do the customary apolo and head bowing;
And ... he has/will resign.
No prob --- he will get hired back by them as a `Consultant`.
Happens all the time.
Enjoy
Cosy Corner in the meantime.

the milk here IS real milk.
The simple fact is that in Western countries there is always what's known as a "milk lake". Quite literally, they produce too much milk, so the extra is stored (although not literally IN a lake) so that ALL the milk is already OLD when it hits the shelves!
The only reason that isn't done in Japan is because milk isn't seen as an essential food product here - it's an obtainable extra, much in the same way your country would view Asian rice. "It's not essential, people can live without it very easily, but if they WANT to buy it then let's put it on the shelves while we've got it!"
Same thing with butter - in the UK I could only ever buy butter with a couple of months MAX until the use-by date because of the "butter mountain". Here, I was already buying butter with next June's date about 2 or 3 months ago at LEAST!
And
reallyreal - no-one that I know of
ever claimed that
"it was only foreign companies/countries which had problems with their food/drink."! But if a foreign company or country DOES have problems, why the hell should Japan accept the filthy, contaminated, toxic rubbish just because it IS foreign? Would you want YOUR country to take all those Fujiya goods that have been taken off the shelves?
