and other carbonated drinks just plain suck. I won't even mix Myers Dark Rum with it. Try Gogo no koucha's straight tea instead. yummy.
Teas are much better drinks. even Pocari Sweat is better. and for that matter even the terrible Aquarius drink.

I think the Coke bottle idea is the best yet. I have a question: In the US most soft drinks now use corn syrup as a sweetening agent in the non-diet drinks. What is used in Japan? I remember the good old days when sodas were sweetened with sugar and come in glass bottles. There is a difference in the taste!

Urban myth about coke eating out your guts as gastric fluids are much more acidic than Coke, but not good for teeth

Gastric fluids are indeed much more acidic than coke, but our stomachs and intestines are built to accept that gastric fluid. There are also various types of gastric acids, used to break down different types of food. Eg; The acid used to digest salad foods, is not the same as is used to digest bread. One reason we should not put croutons in soup or salads. The stomach can only utilize ONE gastric acid at a time. When it starts to mix them, the digestion process slows down considerably, leaving gastric acids in our stomachs. The result is heartburn and that bloated feeling. You may even feel tired after a meal. That's the stomach working harder than ever to get the food out of your system before it starts to rot in your stomach. (Food in your stomach will rot almost 100 times quicker than it would if it was outside).
Never eat fruits AFTER a main meal. Fruits, and remember, a tomato is NOT a vegetable, it is a fruit too, pass from the stomach into the intestines, where they are converted into energy. This starts happening within 20 minutes of eating them. Watch lions next time they take a kill, they don't usually go for the meat part of an animal unless they are really hungry. They go for the intestine to get the energy from the animal.

The acid in coca-cola can actually trick the stomach into thinking it is gastric acids, and thus, your stomach may release gastric acid quicker than is needed, leaving the cola to sit in the stomach longer, meaning it can and will erode the lining within.

We are fortunate however, that our stomachs and intestines replace lining rather quickly. But drink too much coke too often, and not only will you wind up with nasty teeth once the enamel has been eroded by the coke acids, but you'll end up with a very bad digestive system too.

Depeche_girl: I agree, Pepsi is much better than Coca-Cola anyday, but even so, still not healthy.

The "newly designed" can looks like a way of reducing production costs, it's simpler so it requires less paint and printing time. A similar move was behind the narrowing of the top of drinks cans, since the metal used for the top was more expensive than that of the body. They are probably looking to clean up in China with this more cheaply packaged version.

The best ad they ever made was with Mean Joe Green, here in Japan they have had some classics, Four Leaves, Pinkie and Killers, things went severely downhill in the 90's, to the point where they started recycling old campaign strategies, a sure sign they have lost confidence.

I'm not sure their problem can be solved by a new tag line, their brand is tied into a single product that the public no longer wants, they have tried to diversify but somehow the mid 20th century catches up with them everytime.

Coke as acidic

First, coca-cola, and any other carbonated drinks are not acids. They are a BASE. If you all remember your chemistry classes, bases neutralize acids. This is why carbonated drinks are often used to settle upset stomachs. Alka-seltzer is nothing more than aspirin and calcium carbonate.
This is also why coke may sit in your stomach longer, because the acids and bases have to become balanced. The sugar molecules do start getting broken down immediately though.

It is a myth that only one type of acid works at a time in the stomach. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of different chemicals working in your stomach and digestive tract at all times.

Regarding heartburn, it is commonly caused by eating too much, which raises the acids in your stomach to the level of your esophagus. This is what causes the burning feeling. You can eat your croûtons with your soup and salad, just don't eat too much. croûtons and vegetables, especially if whole wheat, take much longer to break down than sugar and liquids, and thus stays in your stomach longer.

Eating fruit during or after a meal is ok. The reason why it may irritate your stomach is that fruits, especially oranges, grape fruit, and tomatoes, are very acidic. Adding acid to acid is a bad feeling if you have eaten too much.

ok, honestly, that's it? that's the "new" design? so, you made the swoosh under Coke a little thiner, and you took out the bubbles. man... we need some better marketing people. so, coke in McD's isn't really coke? I thought it was, just seperated in syrup and carb. water, and they just mixed it. oh well, still tastes bomb....

If I drink a cola I will choose Pepsi over Coke however I have used Coke to remove bumper stickers.(For some reason Pepsi will not remove the sticky goo as well as Coke.) I most often drink bottle water and some juices. I occasionally purchase soft drinks from an Asian market and I find them to be overly sweet. But my favorite thing to do is to try water bottle in other countries. My favorite so far has been water from Austrailia!

ok... what?! you use soda to remove bumber stickers?! first off, why are you putting bumper stickers on your car anways? it ruins the value. and second, what the heck would possess you to try using a soft drink for that? I never heard of that before.

wrong, soda is an acid

jnphillips said .."First, coca-cola, and any other carbonated drinks are not acids. They are a BASE"

WAY off! That's kind of funny though. Carbonated drinks are in fact acid, to be precise they are are carbonic acid, hence the name, carbonated drinks.

AND, you should not eat fruits after a meal. You should eat then first, unless you want bad gas.
The reason is that fruits digest in the small intestine. If you eat then last, they wait in your stomach for the other food to go down and in the mean time they ROT, causing gas. They don't digest, they rot. Eat them first and get the health benifets from them. THEN have your meal.

Please ignore the above comments by jnphillips 1970 concerning Coca Cola. I hold a Master's degree in chemistry and can assure everyone that his/her post is garbled mixture of falsehoods/halftruths and misconceptions.

Frankly, don't even take my word for it, simply google a few of the assertions he makes.

The pKa of carbonic acid/bicarbonate is 6.37. It is therefore capable of buffering from pH 5.37 to 7.37 effectively. The pH of our blood plasma (7.3) is controlled by this equilibrium. The pH in the stomach can be as low as 1 due to a high concentration of hydrochloric acid. Carbonic acid cannot buffer this pH. In the intestine the pH varies greatly due to acids and bases released by various microflora and digestive processes: duodenum 6.0 to 6.5, jejunum and ileum 7.5 and closer to 5.5 in the large intestine.

Honestly, what processes people to comment on things of which they are nearly completely ignorant as if they had something useful to contribute?

Coca Cola Marketing Crosses all Cultures

Coca Cola Marketing and its success worldwide is rather impressive and amazing.
Coke has traversed the globe and inserted itself as a cultural icon throughout the world even in spite of its history and development in the rural backwaters of the American South.
The product is well known and accepted from the highest cultural extremes in the industrialized world to more remote and scenic climes whether it be in the cultural mores of Andean indians or the tribes of new Guinea.
Truly a sales and marketing success story.

benzenec6h6, when carbon dioxide dissolves in water, relatively little of it becomes carbonic acid. It's pretty much irrelevant, because we're talking about Coke...not carbonic acid. They aren't called carbonated drinks because they contain tons of carbonic acid...it's because they have dissolved carbon dioxide. jnphillips1970 is still wrong mind you, but you aren't correct either mister fancy chemist pants.

CocaCola has a ph of ~2-2.5, definitely NOT a basic solution. Adding acid to acid is definitely not going to help your upset stomach.

Still, jnphillips1970's other assertions are truthful as far as I know. There are tons of chemicals released in the process of digestion. Heartburn is caused by too much acid. Many fruits are acidic and aren't going to be very good to eat after a huge meal.

The reason he might have thought people used Coke for their stomachs is because people used to use Pepsi for that purpose because back then it contained pepsin (aids in digestion).

Anyway, congrats all of you for spreading misinformation and not talking at ALL about the subject of the news post.

"They aren't called carbonated drinks because they contain tons of carbonic acid...it's because they have dissolved carbon dioxide."

"Carbonic acid (ancient name acid of air or aerial acid) has the formula H2CO3. It is also a name sometimes given to solutions of carbon dioxide in water, which contain small amounts of H2CO3. "

Speaking of spreading misinformation.....
