I don'T know whether I'd laugh or cry if that evil little coward gets off on a technicality because of this. It would just show how corrupt and incompetent Japan's police and judicial systems are...

I am sure there is plenty of other evidence left. Plus there is the simple fact that while they were examining the evidence, no other suspects or possibility of other suspects came up.

The prosecution may have to work a little harder now, but it seems that, short of severe incompetence, they cannot lose.

The only thing this really changes is it may be harder to discover or prove involvement by the rest of the family or others, but I seriously doubt there was any.

I doubt he'll get off on a technicality since he's already confessed.
In Japan confession is king and usually results,99.9% of the time, with a conviction!
The cops wouldn't have it any other way!

He confessed to the crime (probably under some type of coercion) but never the less he's as guilty as sin and should be terminated. Sent the cost of the rope to his parents.

Thanks for saving me the effort of trying to figure out how to spell "smevidence".
Who cares if the police lost the evidence. Conviction rates in the high 90 percentile make it kind of moot, don't they?

Toolonggone,
Perhaps the missing items were put in a box to be kept together and the entire box was thrown out or pinched by some freakazoid otaku.

Police said they might have mistakenly disposed of the items as waste. The items, each of which is packed in a bag, had been kept in a cardboard box at the Yoyogi Police Station.

The one time they clean the office and they end up throwing away evidence from a murder. DOH!

You can't write comedy like this, can you?
