Let's hope his minders let him out of the compound more often.
That was my first thought, as BS he was "going for a jog", he was over the wall and off.. run Prince, run!

I don't think he lives in the Imperial Palace, so why would he normally run in there? I think he lives in the Crown Prince's residence. I wonder if he jogs around the outside of that?

No longer able to endure the unendurable, choosing not to listen to the flunkeys who sought to dissuade him from going through with it, Oshaka sama expressed a desire to venture beyond the enclosing wall, to view with his own eyes the conditions pertaining in the metropolis. After that he was never the same, never.

I like this Prince in many ways. He tries his best to cast a normal human feeling to a somewhat reclusive aspect of the royal family. It would have been wonderful if he comes out next time to jog with Masako. I am sure he is highly regarded by the public despite the pressure he feels from the Imperial Household Agency.

Not bad sir... and I did see his form on the news last night. Hey as a runner myself I dare say the gentleman is no pretender. He's legit!
Let that be an inspiration to some of you idle computer glued people - think about some exercise will you? AND I CERTAINLY DON'T MEAN THE GYM!!!!!!!
No body ever got fit in a gym - we all know that. Besides, people sweat in gyms. Out doors we perspire. Yes real men, women and princes perspire.
Geez... I can't wait for the flak I'm about to recieve...

You're absolutely correct. The story is both are popular figures
internationally as well. A good guy hamstrung by self-serving morons.

He covered the 10-kilometer route in about 50 minutes, stopping a few times to greet onlookers.
-this prince (crowned) is in good shape, but he should be dragging his wife along with him (good for the brain). It must be fun having the IHA employees forced to run with/behind you.
I remember when President Clinton would run in the morning then make a dash into a DC McDonald's and shamelessly grab a fatburger. -Those were the days and before his bypass surgery.

Was it 10 km's per person or a combined 10 between the ten of them? Okay, okay time to quit but thanks folks for keeping this one a feel good discussion - appreciate it.

I think it says a lot about Japan and the Imperial family/Household agency that when one of them goes for a jog it gets national attention. Talk about a tight leash.
Not having jogged outside the Palace for "several years", is pretty amazing. It is like they are all in some kind of time warp or something and they come out occasionally to see how the world has changed. I can imagine his first words yesterday -- "Oh look, Marunouchi has some tall buildings now."
I don't understand the Japanese people. They pay for the Imperial Family. How come they don't demand that they get to actually see them once in a while -- except on NHK?

What does this, from Badsey, say about the US then?

you have to realise that they do quite a lot in secret without the public or the media knowing.
A very quick example: Last year in summer the Prince came to my town and climbed the mountain that we live near (it is the second highest in Tohoku and on the 100 most important mountains in Japan list) and nobody knew anything about it.
He came, he climbed and left without any media or fanfare.

I was sitting outside the palace of the Norwegian Royals with a friend, and she, pointing casually to a black car we could see departing the palace, said "Oh, that's the Crown Prince, probably off to see a movie or shopping."
No massive protection squad, no hounding press squad, just one car.
Some Royals have it good.
That is exactly my point.
In the U.S. we expect our elected officials like the President to get out and mingle with their constituents. To do real people things -- like jog, shop, eat Big Macs, play golf, etc.(I know that is not the same as a royal family member, but we don't have that in the U.S.) One of the big complaints about Cheney is that he is tremendously isolated from the real world.
That is one of the reasons Clinton survived the Monica Lewinsky thing -- is that he was perceived as a real "good old boy". Hell he even had the nickname Bubba.
I cannot for the life of me understand why the Japanese tax payers pay millions of dollars a year to have a bunch of people holed-up inside some palaces. Or, as beowulf says, climbing a mountain without anyone knowing.
If the Bush daughters can go to college safely, then security for the Imperial Family could certainly be put in place that would allow them to "press the flesh" a little.
The IHA just doesn't want that to happen.

I sadly could not find a real Clinton/McDonalds/Jogging picture. Clinton jogged about every morning back them and then would drop into a McDonalds (for a hashbrown+coffee I think).
The problem when you are Royalty is that you are powerless to make change > You are a figurehead or symbol for your nation. If fact the Japan Royals are not allowed to have public political discussions. The Royals should be more of the voice of the people > Maybe they do make change and cause pressure to change behind the scene > They just don't do it publically.
