Why anyone would even ask Toyota the question is bizarre - the future of car making buying another dying relic of US carmaking (which even the Germans couldn't rescue) is preposterous.

Hopefully the Americans will stick to making coffee and software, which at least they seem to be reasonably good at

Thank god! It was painful enough watching Mercedes Benz get dragged down. Hopefully it's not too late for M-B to cut their losses, detach Chrysler and climb back into excellence.

Mercedes doing what? Bailing out Chrysler? Please stop reading fairy tales. I'll ask you to go back to Fokker and then talk about the Chrysler 'fraud'. Chrysler is a perfectly good company that is more than anyone can say about the British auto industry.

MB was in trouble long before they ran Chrysler further into the ground than it was. The M-class was evidence of that. The Germans gave it a shot and failed miserably. As to why people are using this situation to show respect for Mercedes is beyond me. It's an embarrassment for them.

The trouble with the US-controlled car manufacturing industry boils down to 2 points:

1. Poor management
2. Crap products

With the huge domestic market keen to buy US made cars, the US automakers have been protected against their own mistakes and complacency for far too long. That's why GM and Ford are in a constant state of crisis these days. Toyota will soon deservedly eclipse GM and what's more the American buyers can still be happy that they are buying US-made cars, except with good design and high quality, two things that they haven't been used to before. Everyone's a winner

The chrysler cars and trucks sold in the usa are known to be third rate and have a lot more problems than most other makes. A lot of people buy their product only because the price is lower than other car makers. To do this is a mastake as I found out the hard way when I purchased a truck from them.

Oh I thought it had something to do with legacy costs as well. But let me grab a copy of Road & Track 1987 just so I can debate on your level.

no the Japanese may not have our car companies for their economic-in-place-of-their-former-military empire.

legacy costs = bad management (as do most)

you're right about the legacy costs, but you can chalk that up to bad management too.

Interestingly, Consumer's Reports just listed MB as one of the least reliable brands of cars. Not Chrysler though. So did Chrysler "drag down" MB? What I'm reading is that MB transferred a lot of debt to Chrysler and sank their profitability in an effort to shore up the MB name. That's why Kerorkian is screaming bloody murder, because he owns Chrysler shares.

Gee, more bad management. Do I see a trend here?

I guess Toyota wouldn't be interested. They specialize in good management.
