Hate to join the parade, but I'm with wottock and sushi as well.
If this guy was "tortured" as you say -- it was of his own doing/making. He wasn't mentally ill or anything.
No one forced him to misuse the funds. He made a conscious decision to do so.
Then, rather than face the consequences, he takes the easy way out. And, worse, one of his eight notes said that if anyone wants to know the truth of what happened to the money, they should see his wife.
So, not only did he not have the courage to face up to his misdeeds, but on the way out he threw his wife under the wheels of the bus.
Not a man who deserves sympathy in my opinion.

If, as Matsuoka claimed, his office had spent 25 million yen on a water cooler, that's a cool
480,000 yen he was spending a week!!!

Matsuoka also claimed his office was buying 'special water' at
5,000 yen per bottle.Grab your calculators and you'll agree that's
100 bottles a week.If he had bought them at Lawsons, he could have walked away with
4,370 bottles of good Japanese water for the same bill!
If you were Matsuoka, would you want 4,370 bottles, or 100 bottles?
Myself, I'd rather have beer, but that's beside the point. :-)

She said something like, 'If he had the guts and courage to kill himself, then he should have had the courage and guts to explain himself to the public.'
Wow, someone said that? Then there is hope for Japan.
The thing I fear most is if this crook is turned into a martyr, and an example to the kiddies of how to pay for one's wrongs. It may be in ill taste to criticise the dead, but this guy, and his actions certainly deserve a public bashing.
Once again family is less important-
Where is the apology to his wife and kids.
Are all the notes the same or are they all different?
Pretty pathetic suicide note really.Pretty pathetic man at the end too it seems.

"Where is the apology to his wife and kids."
Apology Notes #3, #4, and #5, or so I am led to believe....

Sushi,
Nicely put! My daughter and son (7 and 5) were asking why a show they were watching was interrupted by someone who did
jisatsu, and what is it.
When I explained what it was, they continued with "why does someone do that?" And my daughter asked, "Why do they tell kids about it when we are watching our show??"
I had to explain that some people choose to kill themselves instead of taking responsibility for their actions. And continued by saying that their family and friends will be left with the sadness of his selfishness.
While they did not understand everything completely, I hope they learned that suicide is not an option. I can only hope more suicides by politicians or school officials do not make my words to them seem trivial.

Definitely forced or driven to suicide...but the guy is still a wanker. Think of the political change he COULD have (if only very remotely potential...again, don't forget where we are)perhaps brought on had he only told the truth! And exactly why the orders from above not to breathe a word? Japanese politics is rife with corruption...right to the top. His life would have been hell had he spoken but now he's rotting in hell. Expose all the rotten politicians. Japanese public; wake up and smell the green tea!

I'm with Wottock on this one.
The more I hear, the angrier I get. I understand how this guy was torn between his allegance to the dark side and his duty to the public -- but I find it harder and harder to give a toss. Futile death and inadequate apology do not square the debt.

These criminals deserve public scorn for thinking suicide can erase the slate.
Anyone connected to the crimes - needs to be on 'suicide watch' ... perhaps given baby food and diapers while rotting in prison. I wonder how many pensioners slowly starved to death while these politicians drank their 'special' water?
Evil stupid and selfish - I also hope he died alone and in tremendous pain.

Matsuoka was just one of the almost 100 people who killed themselves that day in Japan. Over 30,000 every year here. Isn't it true that humans are the only living creatures who have the mental capacity to kill themselves (except for that breed of scorpion that will stab itself in the back if surrounded by a ring of fire. I guess coyotes that chew their leg off to escape a trap don't count)? Does that mean we are really superior because we are clever, strong and can contemplate it and actually do it? Or is it that we are really stupid and weak? Like it or not, it may well be the former. At the end of the day, suicide is not frowned upon in Japan and many of the historical Japanese stories of samurai still taught to kids in Japan today are about people who committed suicide.
He killed himself to hide the trail of the money going to the family bank accounts. check their accounts. sorry can't feel sorry for them when they had a crook in the family that worked for the country suppossedly.

"Follow the money..." - always a good strategy in political dirty doings.

Sticking up for corrupt public figures again? Well, I suppose you DO have form on doing that...Wolfowitz being the most recent example. A rather less tragic result there, fortunately.
Matsuoka was selfish - the corner he found himself painted into was the result of his own brushstrokes. I'd have found some grudging respect for the guy if he had admitted to what he'd done, but to kill himself and to ask for forgiveness in doing so is pathetic. All suicide is selfish - whatever your religious beliefs (none in my case), no-one has the right to quit on life even though many may feel that they have valid reasons to do so.
I bet his family would prefer him alive and shamed than dead and...shamed
