is the LDP getting reelected, and they're not above using beauty when ugly policies fail to persuade. I got this insight from the Picture of the Day. It's too commonplace to seriously ask why.

Another useless appointment...

She did virtually nothing as "National Security Adviser", so can't expect that she will do much more at Defence.....

In her first action as new Defense Minister

Koike announced that the Self Defense Forces will immediately switch to "cool biz". Koike said she was "highly impressed" by the uniforms of Philippine Army soldiers and how they allowed the troops to "carry out their duties comfortably in a climate which is not that different from the summers in Japan."

Henceforth the official summer uniform of the Self Defense Forces will consist of flip-flops, cutoff camoflaged shorts, bright Madonna T-shirts and bandannas.

well, at least...

There is not a single second to be wasted...

The usual hyperbolic statement until she settles in.

I hope to work on [the various tasks] while consulting with the Defense Ministry and cooperating with other concerned ministries.

In other words, she doesn't know much about national defense, and it doesn't really matter because the bureaucrats will sort it out anyway. Ministerial posts in Japan are handed out like assigning high school teachers to supervise club activities.

Of course she won't do anything

At this point, Abe is afraid to appoint somebody who will actually do something. Just look what happens when somebody dares to do or say something! It's always a fiasco. I’m sure Abe’s informed her: “Please, do nothing. Say nothing. Stay out of my way!”

It sometimes seems that all Abe's cabinet members are like ice sculptures: if you turn up the heat a little, they just melt.

When in doubt appoint a woman.

As a college professor of mine said

Women over 50 should fight wars -- there is nothing meaner than a women having hot flashes with a gun in her hands.

Well, I wish Koike luck, even if its a "do nothing" job. Can you imagine how awkward she will feel when meeting her counterparts from other countries.

Dam it, I momentarily confused her with Ms. Ai Kato (pictured above) and thought we were all in for a rare mickey-taking treat...

It is time for enlightenment and peace. Peace is a foreign policy as well as defense strategy that works quite well... for Switzerland... 800 years of peace. With all the world discussion about Hiroshima, right and wrong... let there be a positive thing that comes from this.. begin an annual Hiroshima Peace Concert or Peace Festival that lasts 3 days in August. Televise it to the world and share the message of peace, the inspiration of the A-bomb survivors and the legacy of Hiroshima, Nagasaki and today's beautiful Japan will be to inspire the world to live in peace. This is the right thing.
