warning that if Japan fails to fulfill its commitments to provide energy aid, the nuclear issue will remain unsettled.

Ah. Blackmail. And both sides are doing it. Nice. Not.

How are both sides blackmailing? One side is blackmailing and the other side is simply not complying.

DPRK is acting illegally by holding Japanese abductees. How is requesting that they stop acting illegally blackmail?

And what legal obligation is Japan under to give DPRK anything? None. The extortion is one way.

More "consequences" in store for Japan if it doesn't pay up - I wonder what those could be. DPRK has NO leverage, and these "sea of fire" threats in exchange for money are getting old.

Peace

"How are both sides blackmailing? One side is blackmailing and the other side is simply not complying."

You're absolutely right, unfortunately you have the sides confused.

Japan is saying they will never send aid or help NK until they 'resolve' an issue that's been resolved already. NK simply refuses to buy into Japan's weak demands.

The result? NK wins; they get the aid they want from the US in agreement to shut down a reactor, which the US inspectors proved they did. Where was Japan, sulking in the corner that they were shunned and ignored, and scared to death that now the DPRK won't buy into their threats and won't set a deadline to denuke. Who can blame them when the dialogue goes like this:

US: Issue on the table, the denuclearization of NK.

NK: We are willing to do so, with concessions if we do.

Japan: Yes, the abductions.

US: This is about nuclear weapons and aid in return.

Japan: That's what we said, this is about the abduction of Japanese nationals.

(NK walks out).

Japan: What? Didn't the nations of the world come here to talk about an issue that is only between NK and us? I mean, wasn't that what this is all about?

Forgive my comic embellishments, but that's more or less how it goes. I'm surprised Japan doesn't bring up the abduction issue during environmental conferences. Next they'll be saying the abduction of Japanese nationals contributes to global warming, while pollution in Tokyo helps prevent it!

In other words... Japan uses any forum possible to bring up unrelated and irrelevant issues. It is no surprise every other country finds Japan useless in the talks, and why the US wanted to go ahead with a 4-party separate talk with only those involved in the Korean War (and succeeded).

Hahahaha... Let's useful Japan!

Well, first you igonre them.
And, if they threaten you, you call the police,
And then if they actually get physical, you kill the MF.

the only way to deal with those criminals in the penninsula...

much like I said yesterday on this topic in another post. Japan does win at least at home by not sending its citizen's tax money to Kim Jong Il. Unfortunately my home country caved to the little tyrant and my tax money will go to him (not his people). It's a never ending cycle, the next time Kim wants more he will threaten to restart his reactor. I will say it again, isolate NK and leave them to their own devices. The reason Japan was pushing the abduction issue within the 6 party talks is because it had the chance to make demands while NK was making demands. Were they the same issue, no but then again why not, they had an opportunity.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs
http://www.mofa.go.jp/mofaj/area/n_korea/6kaigo/6kaigo5_3g.html
注:米中韓露が実施。拉致問題を含む日朝関係に進展が見られるまで、我が国は参加しないことにつき、関係国は了解。)

Economic, energy and humanitarian assistance will be conducted by U.S., China, Korea and Russia. Japan's participation in this matter is subject to satisfactory progress of the bilateral issue between Japan and DPRK including the abduction issue. All parties agreed.

During the March 28th 2007 Economy Trade Committee hearing, the representative indicated the remaining aid will be resolved between the 4 nations (China, U.S., SK, and Russia) pusuant to a separate agreement by those 4 nations.

Smith:

The normalization between North Korea and Japan/U.S. are part of the agreed framework of the Six nation talks.

"3. The DPRK and the US will start bilateral talks aimed at resolving pending bilateral issues and moving toward full diplomatic relations. The US will begin the process of removing the designation of the DPRK as a state-sponsor of terrorism and advance the process of terminating the application of the Trading with the Enemy Act with respect to the DPRK.

4. The DPRK and Japan will start bilateral talks aimed at taking steps to normalize their relations in accordance with the Pyongyang Declaration, on the basis of the settlement of unfortunate past and the outstanding issues of concern. "

The actual achievement of normalization is not a requirement for NK to denuclearize and hence, NK does not have to solve the abduction issue. In turn, as stated in my previous post, Japan does not have to fund the aid until the abduction issue is resolved to their satisfaction.

So let's see how "useful" other nations have been.

U.S.: Negotiator. Caved into NK demands of frozen funds even though the issue had nothing to do with denuclearization.

China: Provided a place to meet.

SK: Provided the first shipment of fuel. Got nothing in return. Continuation of Sunshine Policy Failure.

Russia: Absent. Still pi$$ed off because NK still owes them money. Therefore, their "aid" may be relegated to cancellation of the said debt.

Japan: Absent. Won't fund a single yen until abduction is solved.

So I guess being "useful" means getting "schooled".

US: Issue on the table, the denuclearization of NK.

NK: We are willing to do so, with concessions if we do.

NK: We are willing to do so, with "ADDITIONAL" concessions outside the agreed framework if we do.

Let them starve. Then ignore them. Then hit back with furious anger and vengence when they get stupid.
(Stupider than they already are, as if that is actually possible).
