I think people's instincts are accurate.
We should look at defoliation when paving over the surface. Look at a typical city under Google Earth. What did we expect?
Looks like a virus.
Theres all these thermal updrafts over cities that can keep a glider up all day.
Better to err in the right, treat global-warming enthusiasts as prophets and start respecting balance in general.
Forget about population controls, only China has enough vision to do that.

It depends on the density of the forest and its albedo. While forest growth absorbs CO2, the lower albedo will cause some heating to offset it. And once the forest is fully grown the CO2 reduction potential will reduce drastically while the low albedo heating will remain constant. I'll have to look for the report but it is expected that only tropical rainforests would have a significant effect. Other forests may cause a net heating effect.
Of course, it is also possible to do something like grow corn, dry it out, and bury it somewhere. This would be somewhat similar to the idea of seeding the oceans with iron to create algae bursts which will afterwards die and sink carrying their absorbed CO2. You need to grow a crop that has little effect on the background albedo (or is even higher than it) and then place it in a way that it doesn't emit CO2. I think these ideas are promising but the climate scientists at Realclimate are a lot more skeptical (especially on the algae option).

Because heaven forbid we do a thing to lift a finger ourselves!
It's funny that as it gets hotter and hotter, people 'look to the forest' to help them. Then come spring they get louts in office like Ishihara to promise them to cut down all the trees to 'wipe out pollen once and for all!'.
Try not watering your doorstep every day, thus conserving water. Try recycling a little more and burning a little less trash. Stop wasting, and consume a little less on all fronts.

Ishihara's already made it clear that the forest is evil and must be destroyed by planning the destruction of Yogogi park to make way for the Olympic stadium! If everything went Ishihara's way, Tokyo would be covered in plastic trees manufactured in China that play the Japanese empirial anthem 24/7 from built in speakers in the stump.

Amazing that they would catch on that shade would help make things cooler among other things. Go figure.

If that's the case, then why am i always surprised when I pass a tree in Tokyo.. "My God, what is that green thing!" as it's not like the govt goes out of their way to plant new ones.. how about grass playgrounds instead of dirt and concrete??
