Why the 19th, I don't know, because if Nova doesn't have it today, I don't see on where they'll get it from for Friday.

To be frank, I don't know whether to feel sorry for these people or scoff at their ignorance. Perhaps a bit of both?

The writing has been on the wall for months now, and anyone with half a brain should have gotten out then or started a new job search at least. Even now, new instructors are coming over who don't know about this mess, and I'm just astounded that someone would pick up and move across the world and not do even just a little research on what they were headed into. I know that when I first came over, I scoured the internet and even called the US Embassy here in Tokyo asking about my future employer.

Looks like there's suddenly going to be a whole lot more foreign English teachers in the market very soon the way NOVA is going. If I worked for them, I'd be searching for alternate employment now to beat the rush.

Even back when I was doing the eikaiwa gig (shudder...) some ten years ago, word from the wise was that Nova was a place you worked for a year or so, and then left for a better job found using the contacts you made. Like the other posters say- take the money and RUN!

it's all over for nova

Anyone who is now still with them is pretty much screwed. The writing was on the wall.

Not a good time to be out of work, this November...

Nova teachers, especially those "working holiday" clowns who underbid and dislodged many serious eikaiwa teachers of longstanding should simply pack their carpetbags and get their sorry arses out of Japan ASAP.

Simply put, they should Go Home. Party is Over. Lights Out, etc., etc.

Sounds harsh, doesn't it? But otherwise if they remain here, they will not only end up antagonizing their Japanese hosts, but also flood the eikaiwa market and further depress the already meager wages teachers receive, making impossible to raise a family.

No legal action(s) pls

Don't waste your money and time further, instead seek help from your consular office and put an end to your career in Japan, bigger world outside this island is waiting for you.
Be optimistic and wishing you good luck !

nova just didnt sell enuf pink nova usagi to their students. teachers and staff not getting their pay is really nasty. students not getting their fees back is just as bad. management ought to cough up the cash, but i guess it still wouldnt be enuf to cover the thousands of unpaid workers. this sucks.

English teaching is a valid job (though personally one I'm glad I've never had to do). It does surprise me when you hear about certain teachers who've worked at Nova for years, though. I always thought it was a first stepping stone onto a 'proper' teaching job or just a post-grad holiday for a year or two in Japan.

Perhaps this'll prompt some teachers to move on to bigger and better things. No job is worth sticking with when you are being treated with this degree of contempt. Getting paid is the absolute minimum...

This whole NOVA debacle is sad news indeed. Why do some people stay for more than a year? Good question.

Despite being the butt of most eikaiwa-related jokes, some people choose to stay with Nova because it offers (or I should say "offered") them a career. Teach a few years and then you can get promoted to one of a variety of different positions, with better pay and conditions. Nova was only a dead-end job for those who had no intention of staying in Japan for more than a few years (the majority of teachers). It was, however, also a large Japanese corporation where a foreigner who applies him/herself, could move up the food chain. There are very few major Japanese companies that offer such positions to foreigners.

I have little sympathy for the transient teachers who are here working-holiday visas. They may lose a bit of cash, but can go home and get on with their lives. No harm done. However, a lot of family men/women in higher management positions are being hurt by this, which is why Nova needs to scrape up the money from somewhere. These people have families to support, and zero income!

Well I guess

that'll be 4000 sets of fingerprints and photos not needed then. Anyway, best of luck to those stuck at nova!
