Hotel installs toilet for guide dogs

TOKYO — Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku has installed a toilet for guide dogs, the first hotel in Japan to do so. The toilet was first installed in the outdoor balcony area on the 2nd floor of the hotel. But the hotel moved the toilet to a flat area with a roof near the lobby floor of the south building, where wheelchair users with guide dogs can easily access it.

So will the dogs be able to contain themselves until they get to that spot? They wouldn't be able to rush there since they'd be guiding their owners...I guess that's why they moved it from the 2nd floor but suppose the dogs are coming from a room, say on the 5th floor...?

Great for those in wheelchairs however...

I'm thinking that unless there is a pretty agressive PR campaign, not so useful for the blind.

I was told that other senses of a blind person are enhanced, perhaps there is another way for a blind person to notice this little doggy corner without having to see it.

So where's the handle to flush the toilet?

They should make it so the owner can use it at the same time.

I have never seen that!

nimbus: I worked for the VA while I was in college. I met the trainers of those dogs (former military) and they said the guide dogs are trained to bark when they need to go.....

Neat! Personally when I travel I have to look for hotels that accept large dogs. I am lucky that one chain here in the US does so - but I have to take him outside in a special place on the grounds to go to the bathroom. Dogs can hold it in if trained to do so - and for long lengths of time too.
