Karate girl fights off knife-wielding attacker in Saitama

Folks,
I read these posts but rarely respond. First and foremost, I am gratified and satisfied that this young woman was able to defend herself against such a pathetic worm, and had the presence of mind to contact the police. This one really got me fired up. Is it just that Japan Today only focuses on these purient posts about rape and murder, or is this really an increasing problem in Japan. My daughter is Amerasian, has graduated with a double major B.A. in English and education and a minor in British Literature, (she is enamoured with the UK)and has thought about teaching in Japan. But the more I read these reports on Japan Today, the more inclined I am to tell her she would be better off in a public school in Detroit or D.C. Help.

The reason you read about this stuff in Japanese papers is because it is an exception to the rule and, therefore, news. This kind of stuff happens so often in the US that it's pretty much buried in the big papers. You have to get to the regional papers before you see this in the US.

On the other hand any young woman in any country should be street smart when it comes to safety. Seems like this girl was. Not easy to break from an attack from behind and then deliver a well aimed blow. She's done well. I hope somebody manages to convey this to her, but I imagine she is still pretty frightened by the whole experience.

 

I heard that she also counted to infinity...twice AND that the boogey-man checks his closet for her before he goes to bed at night.

According to this Yahoo Japan news story, she elbowed him in the gut first with her left elbow, as he grabbed her from behind, then kicked him in the old testeronies. I bet he regrets waking up that morning... LOL!

My daughter got a black belt in judo when in high school and competed with the boys (=toughies). Fortunately she never needed her skills in a situation like the karate girl.
Well done karate girl. I'm sure you'll inspire a lot of other girls to learn self-defense.

 

Get thee to thine local library, and find thyself there global crime statistics. Allow thyself to be misled by news media in search of readership through selective reporting, thee shall not.

There may be a case for believing that any female with caucasion DNA might be mildly harrassed here more than elsewhere, both sexually and otherwise. But certainly the odds of more serious crime occurring are much less.

She might get groped on the train once or twice, she may suffer the propositions of an annoying porn scout, but on issues of life and rape and other harmful physical attacks, women are safer here by all credible accounts, even foreign women are safer than in their home countries.

Good for her!! I'm glad she had her wits about her when she was assaulted. Nice combos! Makes me wonder if she's played Street Fighter, Tekken or any of those fighting games.

Actually, it was a more dangerous situation than it seemed since the guy had a knife with him and had it near her head. Just his luck he picked on a black belter as his victim. Thank God she's alright. I hope they catch that guy.
