Seven-Eleven to pay overtime to managers

TOKYO — Leading Japanese convenience store operator Seven-Eleven Japan Co is set to pay overtime to some 500 managers of directly run stores from March, company officials said Friday. The decision came after Tokyo District Court late last month ordered McDonald's Holdings Co to pay about 7.5 million yen to a McDonald's shop manager who sought the firm's payment of unpaid overtime.

Seven-Eleven Japan, a unit of Seven & i Holdings Co, currently does not pay overtime to managers of directly operated outlets because they are regarded to be part of management. Store managers of Seven-Eleven Japan work about 45 hours in overtime on average a month.

Among other major Japanese convenience store operators, Lawson Inc and FamilyMart Co have already started to pay overtime to their shop managers.

Oh. These companies will pay for the time being but then they will slowly weed out the ones who complained about not getting overtime pay and be right back to where they were. Corporate profit overrules all else. They will simply find managers who will work overtime for no pay and get rid of the others for some other performance based reason. That is how big Japanese companies work.

Old trick of companies for decades(globally).
Call someone a manager(minus the perks) to avoid paying overtime.

What matters is what is written on the payroll not the actual work/duties done.

my old company tried to do the same with me - and few others. Promoted us to supervisors but left us doing the exact same job. The trick didn't work tho when we refused to give up on hourly pay. So bit by bit we were bullied out and the few ones left at the end were made redundant(i managed to hold on until i eventually moved to japan).
so now u know what's going on when u walk in a shop and everyone around seems to be a manager.

Don`t worry, GABA will get their comeuppance one of these days. This ruling in the McDonald`s case sets a nice precedent that other companies-be they convenience store chains or rip-off English school chains-will have to start paying careful attention to.

Small fish here.

What about the big hitters in Japan ? Toshiba, Hitachi, Toyota ? Seems that it's these companies that really benefit from the free overtime thrust upon their working stiffs ! No way in hell any of these could be competitive if they had to pay the hundreds of hours of overtime a month.
