TOKYO Leading Japanese convenience store operator Seven-Eleven Japan Co is set to pay overtime to some 500 managers of directly run stores from March, company officials said Friday. The decision came after Tokyo District Court late last month ordered McDonald's Holdings Co to pay about 7.5 million yen to a McDonald's shop manager who sought the firm's payment of unpaid overtime.
Seven-Eleven Japan, a unit of Seven & i Holdings Co, currently does not pay overtime to managers of directly operated outlets because they are regarded to be part of management. Store managers of Seven-Eleven Japan work about 45 hours in overtime on average a month.
Among other major Japanese convenience store operators, Lawson Inc and FamilyMart Co have already started to pay overtime to their shop managers.
