Man arrested for sending 2.2 billion spam emails in Tokyo

TOKYO — Police on Friday said they have arrested a man for sending 2.2 billion spam emails with fake sender information. Yuki Shiina, 25, was arrested for allegedly sending nine spam emails, which were ads for gambling and dating services, with fake sender information on Nov 13, 2007, after an Internet service provider reported to police that he was sending massive amount of emails last September.

According to police investigations, the suspect bought 600,000 email addresses for 100,000 yen through the Internet and he sent spam emails from his PC at home. He earned 2 million yen from advertisers, police said. Police believe he has sent 2.2 billion spam emails since May 2006. The suspect told police he didn't think he would be arrested.

A law introduced in 2002 and amended in 2004 prohibits sending spam emails with fake sender information.

There are a few things that I am very bothered by, but spam is not one of them.

I rarely even have to see spam, since my gmail account filters 99% of it out for me. Even if I did have to see it, I can't see how it would make me so mad that I would wish ill on the person that sent it.

Yeah, spam might be a bother, but if your email program is that bad at filtering, get another email address and don't register it on every site you visit this time.

The advertising companies that the guy was making money off of. If they should be held responsible for perpetuating this. With all of the PC rules (political corrctness, not personal computer) that govern people's behavior so that they are not negatively affecting others... why does this not fall under the same catagory? Oh look, where did this soapbox come from?

Its so bad that they create programs to bypass filters just to hoc their wares. Remember the days of telemarketing? I've yet to recieve a single sales call anymore. ^^, and now we have a ubunch of folks thinking I'll spill $$ into their pants because of phallic enlargement or increasing my drive for... and pills that I don't even know what country they come from. They're not even in the same country most of the time! International laws need to be evolved for this.

a long jail term, during which the only correspondence he could receive would be spam mails, and the only music he could listen to would be Barry Manilow's Greatest Hits.

This is hilarious, i couldnt stop laughing when i read this. Thats a hell of a lot of emails!
I think it is a fitting price we should pay for taking all this computer crap too seriously. His only crime was to engage in electronic social interaction, whilst millions are dying of loneliness. We invented this man, he is everyones nightmare.

No - people like this moron help to clog up servers with offensive and fraudulent rubbish, causing problems for honest businesses, such as mine!

I have no sympathy - they should fine him heavily

Hang him. Spammers are the major source of internet congestion and should not get any leniency at all.

"In a perfect world... all spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penisses, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship." ;)
