I wonder if it was the bus driver or the truck driver that was running the red light? Considering it was the bus that got broadsided, I would have to speculate that it was the trucker.
It never ceases to amaze me just how naive the public is when it comes to breaking a law that is explicitly designed to protect them. And how complacent the jcops are for not enforcing it.
本当に!本当に!ぜんぜん分かりません!
Is it not OBVIOUS?!!!

P.S. This happened just around the corner from my house.

So how many kilometres away is that?
Ah, the vast expanses of what must be a spacious Gifu.

"So how many kilometres away is that?"About 2km.
"Ah, the vast expanses of what must be a spacious Gifu."Gifu is not as spacious as you may think.
Getting back to this story...why isn't there anything mentioned about the truck driver being arrested? Isn't that a given considering typical police tactics?

before we start pointing fingers.
i had a small scale version of this happen to me in the u.s. (me in a saturn station wagon and the other drivers in a civic). hopefully spidey can elaborate on the conditions at the intersection in gifu. but in my case it was partially the fault of the civic (they were turning left on a green light while i was going straight so i had the right of way). but also it was the fault of the city for making a crappy intersection, its hard to explain but suffice to say there was NO possible way the other driver could have seen me coming. thankfully in my case no one died but all the same i don't know if the driver in this situation should be arrested until the conditions are fully investigated.

...watch any red light on a busy road and count at least 5 or more cars going through red lights every time!

the trailer truck passed through the intersection, against a red light, at a speed of 60 to 70 kilometres per hour, with no sign of brake application before the crash.
To hazard a guess, the driver of the truck was probably playing with his cell phone.
If the bus driver died of injuries that occurred after being flung from the bus, I guess his seat belt was busted up pretty good. Condolences to his family.

...that the trucker was racing to get through while the light was changing from from yellow to red, and the bus driver started already at the exact split second where it turned green.
Both are typical behaviour patterns here, and they make for a dangerous combination. Got myself nearly killed on my bike a couple of times because of that, so now I am very paranoid about not trying to go first or last through an intersection.

the light would have turned red 1-3 seconds before the offending truck entered the intersection. As others have noted here, the seeming acceptability of the running of red lights never ceases to amaze me.

I followed a police car through a very red red light the other day. I didn't want to stop, though, for fear of being rear-ended by the taxi behind me.
When a light turns red, if you count to four, your light will turn green. Then, if you count four again (the number of cars running the red light) you are probably - PROBABLY - safe to cross the intersection. Look both ways first, of course.
Good advice. I often suggest to friends visiting on planning to live in Japan to keep this in mind when crossing roads here. You can never be sure who's going to rush through after the pedestrian light has changed to 'Walk'.

From the video on the news yesterday I didnt see any damage anywhere near the driver seat or seatbelt mechanism. I assumed that the driver simply wasnt wearing his belt at all.
