I wonder what fetish or psychological defect makes a guy flip like this. I wonder what goes through his mind as he prepares to attack. Is it even about the girls' hair at all?
A desire to destroy percieved objects of beauty, maybe?
Wanting to feel superior through instilling fear?
To gain self-assurance through humiliation and disfugurement of others?
Issues with female expression through appearances(long hair, make-up, feminine clothig, etc..).
Occam's razor; a hair fetish.
The fact that he never assaulted the girls further than a run-by cutting, probably indicates that he's wary of confrontation.
The fact that he didn't kill or threaten his victims to hide his identity may indicate that he enjoys the trauma afflicted upon his victims and the speculation of his identity, motive, etc.... ie; "They're scared now. Look, they have to go to school in groups now! The cops can speculate all they want they'll never catch me." etc, etc....
Ala, sadistic narcissism.
Or, a want to feel recognized as important, even if resultant of commiting criminal acts. A more confrontational approach to the latter would be serial killings, serial robbery, etc...

Sounds like a good profile to me, but I bet if he's ever caught the more likely story will be he was simply frustrated about being unable to get a job like all the other waist bending 7-11 employees. Someone, please hire this guy. He really wants a job. Or can't you tell?

He was clad in black. The crime scenes were about 700 meters apart.
The police are combing the area for clues on this perp.
| I sincerely hope the police | |

Indeed, he does seem frustrated.
However, the
possible reasons for his frustration are about as numerous as Paris Hilton's crabs.
Couldn't create a strong self-identity to cope with a conformist society?
Maybe his female co-workers weren't showing him "respect". Perhaps he doesn't quite match the description of what is "attractive". Was the wife nagging? Maybe wifey just can't make miso soup like mom used to.
The possible causes are endless.
What I was trying to explain was the resulting mental condition of said frustration, not the cause.
When most psychos attack, they don't see themselves as attacking another human being. Rather, they attack what they percieve the victim is representing.
ie; Ted Bundy, Ed Gain, Jack the Ripper: attacked women who resembled their mothers in appearance or lifestyle.
Maybe our "Demon Barber of Nagoya" is lashing out at what he believes the school girls represent. Whatever that may be.
Another possiblitiy is that he feels society is responsible for his condition, therefore he attacks what society views as precious; the young and innocent, the future of society. Through this he believes that a shocked society will "take responsibility" for the mistreatment that caused him to go nutty.
If the attacks don't escalate, I'm betting on sadistic narcisstic.
If the attacks do escalate, which I hope do not, to murder or bodily harm; idealistic serial killer(ie; Unabomber, Son of Sam) might be the description. Although the methods do seem too gruesome and personal for that type.

Mega LOL!
Not LOL at all - having spent the last 5 years growing my hair from a length just above my ears to down to my waist, I'd be mighty peeved if some perv came along and chopped my hair off.
I do note that the article doesn't state how much hair was cut off or how long the hair originally was, however.

..the girls attacked are still laughing too, after being grabbed from behind by a man wielding a pair of 20cm-length scissors.
Apparently one of them was cut on the neck when the blades slipped; she must
really be giggling.

Good brainstorming. No formal training of my own either, but one thing that comes to mind:
This could be the first time this guy has broken out of his fantasy. Having not been caught and then making the news to boot might fuel him to continue. It could get worse...

One user pointed out a real issue and this can be blamed on the media for their exploitation of young "idols" constantly on tv and the government for letting this happen. I don't know any other country that so openly portrays the over sexualisation of young girls, which then relates to the general lack of respect for women in Japan.

I see a sexual motive for these attacks. It is simply a sexual fantasy that the perpetrator is living out. He clearly has a strong attraction to young school age girls and gets excited from the process of removing their hair in that fashion. I suspect that he would retain the hair as trophies allowing him to re live the moment in private. The floor of his private area i imagine would be very sticky.
