Riyo Mori, 20, smiles after being crowned Miss Universe Japan in Tokyo on Thursday night. Mori, who majored in classic ballet in Canada, said she hopes to become a Broadway dancer. She will represent Japan at the Miss Universe finals in Mexico on May 28. The 174-cm-tall Mori takes over from Kurara Chibana who was runner-up in last year's finals. Thursday's judges included Lotte Marines manager Bobby Valentine.

While this girl is pretty, and apparently talented, is no Kurara Chibana. Kurara Chibana is extraordinary beautiful.

is drop-dead gorgeous.

"majored in classic ballet"

"ballet"

I tried that once. Too difficult. Ballroom dancing is easier. It's difficult, but easier than ballet.

at first, I thought she was abit average but after looking at her blog photos, its clear that Beelzebub is right, she has a natural, honest look...not a "hows my LV bag, Gucci shoes, prada glasses bimbo common in Japanese streets.

if this chick is the best Japan has to offer, then its a pretty sad state here..I mean, I see beautiful women here everyday in Japan..Back in the States, I might see 5 pretty women in one day, here I see 5 pretty women every 5 minutes, but this is the BEST??? Another point, there are no absolute knockouts in Japan like you have in the West as well But on the other hand, the average-looking Japanese woman beats the socks off of the average-looking America woman..

She won Miss Japan, not Miss Universe Japan

this is misleading. Mori hasn't taken over anything yet. She won the Miss Japan contest yes, but hasn't even placed in the Miss Universe contest which they haven't had yet.

She won the miss Japan contest. the word Universe shouldn't be in the sentence.

aw

Smiff - "There are no absolute knockouts in Japan like you have in the West"

Yeah? And how's that possible, bein' as how you said "Back in the States I might see 5 pretty women in one day, here I see 5 pretty women every 5 minutes"?

alpha - Agree she should be "Miss Japan" not "Miss Universe Japan" but like the Mod said, that's the official title of the contest and winner, though I have seen other reports referring to last year's winner Kurara Chibana as "Miss Japan."

Anamoly is right on the money, she is no kurara. In fact none of the contestants have that wow factor that kurara had, kurara was truly something special. Beautiful and talented and intelligent. It seems like the judges are too preoccupied with automatically picking a japanese female that's tall and thin in order to fit their vision of what is considered a miss universe type of beauty, more of a supermodel than a real beauty. That's why I'm surprised they even picked kurara last year to represent japan.

"She won the miss Japan contest. the word Universe shouldn't be in the sentence."

Actually, "Miss Universe Japan" is correct. It just means that she has been selected as Japan's representative to the Miss Universe contest. If there is indeed a Miss Japan (and I haven't checked to see if there is or not), she would be selected in a different contest run by a different organization.

So Miss Mori is taking over for Miss Chibana as Japan's representative to the Miss Universe contest. The caption is vague in referring to Miss Chibana as the "runner up in last year's contest", since she was in fact the *winner* of the Miss Universe Japan contest but the runner-up in the Miss Universe contest overall.

congratulations
