"That generation feels no embarrassment about wearing Hello Kitty"
That still does not impede me from trying to embarass them for wearing Hello Kitty.

"That generation feels no embarrassment about wearing Hello Kitty"
Maybe for some people who like to say "kawaii" to everything they see.
Some people don't want to grow up....

except when they go on tour wearing hello kitty accessories but hey, these are products that not even the slight handed Romans would lift off the hapless Japanese. Maybe its all some kind of pink deterent to ward of criminals.

Very good post. But I would have to day this...
i'm often shocked and appalled (yes appalled) by how childish some adults can be
...says more about how the west can perceive itself as superior than it says about the Japanese.
We have a peculiar sense of what it means to be an adult. It is so deeply ingrained that we dont even question it. But that does not make it correct. It does not even make it better. In some ways, it is extremely flawed.

At last. I was only thinking the other day about how a Hello Kitty t-shirt would suit my 30-something physique.
Is there any chance of a Hello Kitty thong to complement it?

Oh, that's just ridiculous.
I do suppose we have Cultural Differences. Doesn't that make the world more interesting? Young men in Japan may want to wear Hello Kitty brand outfits, that's their choice. Who says all of Japanese men would, anyway?
As a woman though, in all my freedom of choice, I do not find Hello Kitty masculine. Yep, I share Hosomaki's opinion. Adults can be -so- childish in Japan, but he never said ALL adult men are childlish in Japan. Just the ones cuddling toys and wearing Hello Kitty, mayhaps.
I vote for the other ones. Figuratively speaking.
Most Japanese over 40 that I`ve met in my many years here do not agree with you. They think the men in this country in their 20s and 30s are becoming ever more feminine, and that influences like the ones under discussion here are detrimental to this country`s future.
This has nothing to do with "the West" and how it perceives itself as superior to the Japanese-or whatever you are trying to say.
"We have a peculiar sense of what it means to be an adult."
Thanks for speaking for everyone in
The West. There are way too many childish adults in Japan. Period.

I'm actually in agreement somewhat with Hosomaki on this one. However, I also have to agree that there's a huge question of maturity, and while there's not necessarily any one group more 'right' than another, you'll remember what a laughing stock it was when the SDF forces were wearing a cartoon Kitty-like character, and how the Thai Army (or was it the police) were forced to wear Hello Kitty badges as punishment for being lax.
Nope... this won't sell for men overseas at all. And for Japanese men... pray you don't wear it when travelling outside Asia.

in other words, cute=acceptance. I luv the J-ppl in many ways, their hello kitties, their drunkenness which makes their English better all the time and mine worse :D
Didnt know any one would feel so strongly about this.
They think the men in this country in their 20s and 30s are becoming ever more feminine
My post did not address this in the slightest. But I will address it now: I think its undeniable that there is a trend among young males here to be more feminine. Agreed.
This has nothing to do with "the West" and how it perceives itself as superior to the Japanese-or whatever you are trying to say.
My observation was in relation to Hosomaki's observation. I did not mean that Westerners, or even Hosomaki, were being intentionally snooty, but more as a reflex. Like I said, our perception of what it means to be an adult is something we take as a universal truth. Its not. Yet we easily call the Japanese childish while conveniently not having all the facts and simultaneously ignoring childishness in ourselves. Funnily enough, some Japanese say we Westerners are childish, like when we talk loudly even in a quiet setting, show our anger, or are so sure we know better than others, even about their own culture.
Thanks for speaking for everyone in The West.
Is no observation of general Western behaviour safe from this quip? I suspect not.
There are way too many childish adults in Japan. Period.
Thanks for proving my point. Anyway, I would not be so sure. Childish from your perspective, no doubt. But yours is not the only perspective, and I think there are plenty of things about the Japanese you have not seen yet. Heck, I know I have not seen it all either.
