Fortune teller Hosoki goes ballistic over episode of Fuji TV's 'Top Anchor'
Send to a friendPrint

“How to apologize to the fortune teller has been a headache for executives of Fuji TV,” an employee of the network says.

He was referring to Kazuko Hosoki, the best known fortune teller in Japan and the “star” of one of Fuji's highest rated variety programs.

Hosoki has enormous influence over the media.  On May 2, the “queen,” as she is known, made a phone call to the producer of her TV show. “What the hell is going on?” she demanded of him. The producer had no idea what she was referring to. Hosoki went on to explain that the object of her wrath was Fuji's latest hit, the popular drama “Top Anchor,” which earned a 23.1% rating for its first episode and good reviews for its star, Yuki Amami.

It was the third episode on May 1, however, that made Hosoki go ballistic. The episode centered on a fortune teller who told a client: “You are going to hell!” Hosoki's trademark line is “You’re gonna go to hell!” What's more, the hairstyle, the school of fortune-telling, the dialogue and the fortune teller's attitude didn't make it too difficult to see that the character wais modeled after Hosoki.

“The drama is set in a news department. Thus, including a Hosoki-like fortune teller in an episode does, to some extent, reflect the reality of Japan’s current society,” said a Fuji TV spokesperson. “In fact, some staff in the news department at Fuji think that it is wrong to let Hosoki do whatever she wants just because her show pulls in high ratings.”

Even worse for Hosoki, the fortune teller in the drama was exposed as a fraud at the end of the episode.

“Hosoki has been saying that she feels betrayed by Fuji even though Fuji owes her a lot,” said a member of the production staff. “The network did send an executive to apologize, but she was so furious that she turned him away at the door.”

Eventually, one of the producers of “Top Anchor” is said to have gotten down on his hands and knees to beg Hosoki's foregiveness and offer her a feature program.

Already, Hosoki makes 4 to 5 million yen per regular show, so it is anyone's guess how much she will be paid for the feature program.

Fuji's PR department has refused to confirm or deny the apology. Maybe they are afraid Hosoki will tell them: “You’re gonna go to hell without an appropriate apology.” (Translated by Masatoshi Kuwahara)

The truth hurts.

What's funny is that they sent people to apologise to her. She must actually believe her own bulldust.

I'm glad to see the entertainment industry takes itself seriously, even if no-one else does.

Well, she should have known this would happen.

And, she needs to get some perspective. Something like 99.5% of the world's population has no interest or knowledge of her whatsoever.

This sounds a too over the top, even for Japan.

She must think she is some kind of feudal lord.

5 million yen per regular show,

!!!!!

If she does 40 shows a year that's well over $US1.5million, too many zeros to do that in yen.

I predict tomorrow will be Tuesday.

Fuji TV sure know how to squander money. First Livedoor and now this fortune telling fraudster.

Hit the "off" switch.

Let's remember that this is the same Kazuko Hosogi, who, on prime time TV at the end of 2005, told Horiemon that 2006 would be a "great year" for him.

The show is being aired in the bay area, CA. Unfortunately it is not subtitled. But I think I would like to see the episode when it comes out on dvd. I hope that so called fortune teller does not prevent it's release. Her protests have aroused my curiousity. So, I definitely want to see that episode.
