"Toyota depends on the U.S. market for about half of its operating profit."

The US must learn from this and put a stop to it immediately... trust me, the big three auto manufacturers in the US don't have this same type of market access to Japan ! And what about this...

"The slump in the U.S. market is likely to put the brakes on Toyota’s growth because its strategy has focused on grabbing market share from American automakers"

There ya have it, Toyota has made an effort to put American companies out of business for years. Lets hope Prez elect Obama sends Toyota packing and takes over Toyota plants in the USA for GM, Chrysler, and Ford operations !

"a major blow to the Bush administration’s strategy to capture and hold terror suspects without charges."

Idiotic "opinion" of the year ? Seems to me that Bush has done exactly what he was elected to do... keep Americans safe ! It's now up to Obama to carry the torch and protect the US... good luck ! or as you can see, the combatants are slowly being released back into the theatre !

"Donkey - I'm beginning to think you're never going to understand that this financial crisis was caused by Democrat policies of insisting that people who had no business buying a home were given mortgages because it was their "right" to own a home."

Wrong Sarge ! The housing market was simply a symptom indirectly related to the real reason... oil prices going to $147 a barrel ! "That" in itself sent speculators across the board running for cover as they realized that corporate profits are about to be devoured by shipping and material costs. Get with the program kiddies... prime loan, housing bubbles, inflation, deflated salaries, the auto industry, etc... it's all related to oil... not Bush, his policies, the democrats et al. You wanna gripe to someone, try OPEC ! Oh in the meantime, as oil prices continue now to plummet... don't wait too long, this market is gonna turn around with a fury ! You watch, come next summer, you all be back to singing the praises of the ol US of A !

    Sorry buttamimi, but...

"Unlike many other countries, the Japanese did not go on a credit card binge, take out loans they couldn't afford or not save for a rainy day. The Japanese have been, generally, level-headed when it comes to monetary fiscal responsibilty."

You seem way out of touch on this topic. Fact is,Japan's huge government debt, which totals 182% of GDP, is, and has been, doing more damage to Japans economy for the past 10 years than what the US will experience with this short term "adjustment" ! Corporate bankruptcies remain at all time highs and unrecoverable debt will only increase. Americans will consolidate, merge, and adjust accordingly... Japan will just flounder about like a frog in a pot of ever increasing hot water !

    Hold the Mao...

"Again SOME of you "posters" are not business people and have no idea what you are talking about, I politely ask you to read first, do some research and form an opinion then."

No Mao... you are the one in need of more educating. May I suggest you log onto the Tokyo Union South website and read up on what dispatch companys are really doing... especially the one that continues to advertise here... you know the big "I" ! They have a few pages devoted all to themselves and their "suspect" ways of doing business. Enjoy !

Japan has been a major leader in the downturn of the worlds economy. Japan has refused to open its markets, ignored opportunities to increase domestic spending, and has pretty much muddled its way into irrelevance ! The current lack of political leadership will only intensify Japans plight... time to pack yer bags and say good riddence to Nippon ! The sun has all but set !

Japan Incorporated is all but dead in the water. Haken companies do nothing but add to the misery as they encourage companies to blatantly violate Japanese labor law, like the one that states that anyone being dispatched to the same location for more than a year must be hired by that company as a full-time employee. I've seen dozens of language companies pull this including the big "I" that advertises here at this website.

Haken companies are a plague on the system. They don't pay into the pension system or shakai hoken (insurance) and worst of all as they've driven down wages they magnified the increasing speed of Japans working poor ! The situation is simple, why should the Toyotas and Sonys of Japan pay full time wages and offer benefits when they can shirk these social responsibilities onto a pimp industry known as Haken ! These companys, yes Toyota, Hitachi, and Sony et al, have also used haken companys to mask their blatantly racist policies too. Stories of foreign workers being handed off from one company to another is common place... sorry but that doesn't happen with Japanese workers. Even worse, when a foreign worker does an excellent job, at least according to evaluations, observations, and all other measurable methods, and then asks to be hired (as provided by law)... he gets booted ! Again big "I" ya listening ?

If I may so bold, as to speak for the vast numbers of American baseball fans wanting to see quality pitching. Uehara! Please stay in Japan ! Another ticket seller for Japanese tourists is really unnecessary at this stage. We would rather see some local kid, yep an American, get a shot at ML baseball. For once lets leave the salesmen that run mlb out of the picture.

"Japanese stocks fell Tuesday as ongoing anxiety about the U.S. economy and a stronger yen"

Huh ? This poo hit the fan a good two weeks ago ! What you are witnessing now is just more of Japans acceptance that they will forego an import based philosophy to generate domestic spending and try to ride out the loss of their best customer for any foreseeable future. What a nation of fools aboard a rudderless ship !

Japan is still competeing with more, much more, attractive destinations like Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore etc. There is no need to come to Japan to fight the crowds, deal with the language barrier, get gawked at by slack-jawed country bumpkins (sorry but its true, Japanese in the sticks have few manners it seems), or face the hustle and bustle of an expensive country that really doesn't want visitors, just their money. For further evidence of what I speak just ask yourself, why do so many Japanese pack their bags and leave this country every opportunity they get ? In other countries people can have a nice relaxing vacation right in their own backyard... not Japan ! And people will pay through the nose just to get away. Sorry, no confusion here !

    For Cleo:

I asked, "Why is the Japanese media so obsessed with the racial angle of this election ?"

Seems that over the weekend the J media was at it again. Going on and on about how "skin color" influenced some voters. And this response from Cleo only shows to highlight how off base so many of you are here in Japan.

"Maybe the fact that nationwide Obama got 95% of the black vote has something to do with it?"

No it doesn't ! The USA is made up 13% black Americans, or 40 million folks. Your comment would have us believe that 37 million blacks voted for Obama. Sorry, but that would be more than half of the 56 million total votes he did receive, way off base ! Obama won for a few very simple reasons. First, Americans love change ! They always have, always will. The US has a pattern of changing Democrats and Republican Presidents every one or two terms. You have to go back to the 1930's to find the last time Americans voted in Republicans for 3 consecutive terms ! Next, Obama won over hispanics and women to swing the tide in his favor, both groups that relish democratic social programs. Finally, a variety of odds and ends including biased media coverage, liberal encroachment, and a republican candidate simply not up to the standards of the American people. But skin color ? Well, if that was what this election was all about the message is clear... Americans don't care about the color of ones skin, but rather the content of ones character. Now where have we heard that line before ? What a great nation !

Toyota is just another one of them Japanese companies that has been sponging off the good will, and open markets, of the US citizenry for years now. For anyone in Japan to point an angry finger blaming Americans for their economic troubles is an absolute farce. Companyies should not have taken the US consumer for granted ! Or that US markets will always be full of consumers waiting to buy their cheap foreign made goods. In short, if Japan is reeling from the current economic crisis, tough ! Japan should not have put all their energy into one market, and that goes for all the other businesses out there looking to lay blame. You all should be thankful for the millions of dollars you've garnished off the Americans for the dozens of years. And then go and quickly check to see how large a trade imbalance you've been running with the USA, there-in lies your problem !

"The U.S. president, whose vast unpopularity weighed down fellow Republican and chosen successor John McCain’s campaign"

Weighed down ? Ummm, the final popular vote was 56-53 million, hardly any sign of being weighted down. Gee, when is the media going to stop injecting their personal views and opinions in the "news" segments ? Ya got something to get off yer chest, go to the Opinion page !

Ooh, kick to the groin ! This has to hurt, not only financially but also the nations pride. Fact is, if Toyota was really so dominant it would be snatching up market share from the other auto makers in these times of economic turmoil. The consumer out there has just gotten really picky, and odd, but I don't see them flocking to Toyota like Toyota would like you to believe. This very well could be a historically bad year for Toyota, don't be surprised to see "merger" discussions start up to save this sinking ship.
