It must be terrible for them. In the first place having the disease, but then having the ridicule heaped on them. I can see how this could make the effects of the disease worse.

In the 70's in New Zealand, guess what the most controversial power projects were? Yes, you guessed it: hydo-electric power. Big environmental change. The big environmental concern now is carbon and global warming. Nuclear is a clear winner here because it doesn't emit greenhouse gasses. Wind and solar are not going to make a dent in the energy footprint anytime soon.
Posted in: What's your stance on countries using nuclear power for their energy needs? Are there realistic alternatives and if so, what is the most efficient way to phase out nuclear power? Or is it here to stay?

Yes, but this is old news and not relevant to the current crisis.

Yes, but that is only a financial law. Probably doesn't include engineering items. TEPCO have been found guilty before and reprimanded. In this case I can't see where they have been negligent. I would say they are not.

I have seen many people leave on time in Japan. For factories, it's very common. I once worked at a Japanese electronic manufacturer. We followed factory hours with time cards and everything. You couldn't be late, but you got to leave on the dot.

Foreign media turn to pure speculation when reality is hard to cover. I would imagine that everyone living in Tokyo know they are overdue for the next Big One. But using voodoo to predict it isn't helping anyone.

They can stop putting up posters in the parks saying "Please refrain from having a Hanami party" for a start. Leave it up to the individual. All this canceling of events will stagnate Japan just when that's the last thing they need. I think the best way to keep the tragedy in our minds why attending events is to add a charity aspect to events. E.g. a hanami party with a charity bucket to go to the Red Cross.
Posted in: Shoppers' appetite for spending is being restrained by a feeling that it is inappropriate when nearly 28,000 are dead or missing and more than 180,000 survivors huddle in shelters. What effect do you think this attitude will have on the economy this year and what is the best way to encourage people to start spending again?

Power outages and reduced trains is the biggest change.
60mhz? Wow, those turbines must really be screaming! Try 60Hz. That would be very good if they could. I guess they can turn it into DC and then invert it back to AC at 50Hz. I wonder how long it would take to build that. Rather short sighted to have two incompatible systems.

From reports, it felt much bigger than the September quake. Not as big on Richter but shallower and closer. Also, worst timing.
