Latest big TV tower: Guangzhou TV Tower. To be completed in October. Maybe China is going to experience a downturn...
Actually it's interesting to see that Tokyo Sky Tree will be 20 meters taller... BSD territory.

Raising taxes on tobacco and alcohol is a cop out. Raise taxes evenly across the board. Anything otherwise is unfair.

Japanese of my generation ate whale meat for school lunch. None that I have talked to liked it. Most people of generations younger than this probably have never eaten whale meat. The demand for the food is so small. This isn't an issue of demand for the food. It's an issue of pride.

One word: naive
In actual fact I guess Japan would be satisfied with a smaller number of catches because nobody actually eats whale meat in Japan. This is more an issue of national pride.

I can't understand Japan's hypocrisy on noise. In many countries it's OK to talk on a phone on a train. In Japan not. However, the last time I was in Akihabara I couldn't find anywhere I could even make a phone call with people on step ladders with megaphones blasting noise in my face.

Can somebody tell me what happened? Is it one theater in Tokyo won't show it, but others will? Or the whole screening nationwide is canceled. Very unclear.

He was correct, she was not co-operating with her party and prime minister. Hatoyama making the stupid election promise in the first place was his first mistake.
The only way this will ever get sorted is if they revisit the whole security agreement from scratch. They could include changing the constitution at the same time to remove the restriction on how they can use their own services in overseas operations etc.
Also I think the Japanese have a false sense of security and think they won't need the US to defend them. In light of North Korea's recent actions, they should think again.

iPad to charm girls? You gotta be joking. I once saw a Far Side cartoon with a nerdy guy at the beach holding up a blackboard with math on it. A couple of girls were admiring him. Some sort of fantasy world.
Posted in: I have already seen Japanese guys showing off iPads they had bought in the U.S. at parties to impress girls. That's kind of the ultimate test in some ways, although I don't know whether an iPad is enough to attract a charming lady to a boring guy.

That won't cut it. The problem is an aging population and hence a shortage of people. Japan may not like to get all these immigrants, but it's a fact of life that they will need to. So, as this article suggests, have a sensible policy for language training.

I only said it to highlight the absurdity of the statement. I think the rest of my post explains that. No crime is ideal, but don't hold foreigners to higher standards than locals.

Holding guests to higher standards than the local populace is not only stupid but racist. "I say zero crimes from the locals." It's a silly statement, right. So why say it the other way around.
Of course nobody wants any crime. Of course crime will happen. Looking at the stats, the US are succeeding in keeping crime low for their own people.

Of course it would drive the crime out of the business. The high price of drugs only exists because of the risk to supply them. Eliminate the risk and you eliminate the high prices and hence the high profit. Also drug related violence like in Mexico would disappear. In turn governments can make money by taxing it. Makes complete sense.

You are so so wrong here. America could do with 100% more public transportation which is so much more efficient that personal transportation.
The problem is that America is addicted to the car.

Maglev is the latest technology for high speed trains and the only real implementation of this is the Shanghai high speed train from the airport.
It used technology from Germany; so Germany has to be the list. Also Japan has researched a lot of this technology and has demonstrated the fastest maglev trip at over 580 kph.
So I would have to say Germany and Japan have the best high speed technology in the world.
