...guns or any lethal weapon in the hands of lawful citizens prevent more crime than they commit.

Exactly. If Germans had the same right of self defense, this story may have ended very differently. Lives could have been saved.

For the use of guns for self-defense you need a different permit which is only given to professionals - police and security personal.

It is inherently immoral for any govt to take away the right of self defense. Why should the govt privilege some and damn others? How wonderfully totalitarian minded! Preventing crime is a very good reason to own a gun. It may also save your own life, your family or country. Only gun people understand this. The ignorantly ranting weak-minded snob class will never get this.

U.S. and Japanese officials have suggested they could shoot down a North Korean missile if necessary.

Where are those US drones? Maybe its time to threaten Kim with a little more than just shooting down his toy missiles. If you launch a missile Kim, one might be coming right back at you with your name on it.

People who live in rural Australia and the U.S. have no choice but to drive 30+ km to the nearest grocery store.

In Montana, its nothing to drive 200km round trip for shopping.

“It is not at all in keeping with the principles that made this country great, not at all in keeping with economic reality, not in keeping with a stable dollar, and not in keeping with the sentiments of most of this country.”

The voice of a sanity. States have the right to say no to the Feds. You take their money, you do as you are told. Some Americans still like freedom, just like some banks refused to take bailout money because of all the strings attached. Dependency is slavery. Let the blue welfare states take all the money, & when they are beyond bankrupt, maybe The EU will take them in and they can become part of Iceland.

Global warming, global cooling, global warming, global cooling... about every 10,000-15,000 years. Has to do with volcanic activity and/or sun cycles. The sun is actually in a lower energy cycle now. For all we know we could be going into another ice age!

Humans do a hell of a lot to destroy the environment, but come on...we haven't been around long enough to know that human activity is heating the globe. The sky is falling!! Its just a guilt trip socialist scam to rip off "rich" nations and Al Gore is their high priest.

*What is lacking above all... *is confidence in the global economic system. The system is toast. G7/G20 try as they will, no amount of tax and spend priming will re-inflate the bubble. Stimulus spending did not end the great depression & what created the problem (more debt) will not fix it. The present crash is systemic of all fiat currency deficit driven welfare state economies, where there is no incentive to save. This is why California is bankrupt. Real tangible savings is value added wealth, not just paper assets & leveraging market equity with bubbles upon bubbles. What took decades of myopic spending and mismanagement to create will no doubt take as much time to correct.

Allies alarmed by Pakistan deal with Taliban

As well they should be. Taliban forces quickly cut through the Swat region shooting innocents and beheading the opposition. Now, as a reward, they get what they want; a license do continue doing the same with impunity... in the name of God.

And what did the Pakistani govt get in return for negotiating? Nothing. This kind of appeasement resulted in Adolf Hitler's WW2 march across Europe. Make no mistake, the Taliban will not stop until they have toppled the Pakistani Govt. Af-Pak will then become the epicenter of WW3, as the conflict boils over into India/Kashmir. As the US continues to destabilize the whole region by drone missile attacks, is this what the US ultimately wants? The Great depression ended in World war. Looks like we haven't learned a thing from history.

    Yes, Well spoken tkoind2.

    The heroes of capitalism

No one would argue that eating is not a necessity. Gluttony on the other hand, is a form of eating and obviously not healthy. Capitalism by itself is not consumerism or casino economics.

We need to think about how a shift from consumerism

Right! I agree. The shift away from consumerism will happen for all the right reasons, but too late for any soft landing. Consumerism and borrowing have fueled the global economy since 1971. Replacing that with anything sustainable would be like finding a viable replacement for fossil fuels all at once, which will never happen. Economic growth for the foreseeable future, is over. Globalism is over. We are adrift in unchartered shark infested waters.

Obama should get the pilot that safely ditched his plan in the Hudson to manage the economy. The alternative? Print money, sell debt, raise taxes, spend tax dollars... business as usual, but the market doesn't think so.

What's a US bank "worth" tomorrow? What's a stock "worth" next quarter? What is any paper "worth" next year? No one knows... and this is the problem. Until the bottom is found and values reestablished, the crash will continue unabated with all the appetite of an angry bear awaken from hibernation. The Obama money machine will only make the hole deeper & make the paper you hold worth-less in 4 years than it is today. Double the paper to fill a much deeper hole... sounds about right. However, given the death of globalism and the size of the hole we're digging, the "economy" may never return to "growth" as we knew it, for decades.

Shoichi the Finance minister, Didn't think it sinister, To booze it up before the G7 meeting.

While bound for Rome, Far, far from home, He got sloshed in his first class seating.

With Japan in the hole, He traveled on the dole, As an economic financial savior.

But as he spoke to the group, He began to stoop, With what appeared to be drunken behavior.

Its that nasty cold medicine, Taken before the G7, That in fact made his speech to slur.

Verging on the incomprehensible, This is simply regrettable, Mr. Nakagawa, finance minister, sir.
