I agree... what does Japans markets have to do with the US auto industry ? I'd say the real culprit is all the terrible domestic news. "Retail sales plummet to 7 year lows, Exports post record falls in February, Industrial output falls 9.4%" ! Japan's stocks are a reflection of their poor domestic performance, nothing to do with the US auto industry. I guess we should be thankful though, at least they're not blaming it on the weather !

"I agree that many of the countries that ratified it ended up making all sorts of excuses why they couldn't do it, but in light of the fact that the world's biggest CO2 emitter per capita refused to go along, the overall spirit of the Protocol was pretty much moot."
Let me see if I understand your point, because the US saw no benefit by excluding countries like China and India, or the fact that all the American models clearly indicated that the proposal was dead in the water... they should have signed it anyway ?
Now years later the American predictions have all basically come true. Nations that signed on, like Canada, bailed at the first opportunity. Canada now has seen a 26% increase in their emission levels. And how about Spain 49%, or Portugal, Australia, Ireland, Greece... all outpacing US emissions by significant numbers. So many flaws in this global warming nonsense, its hard to tell where to begin. Your misinformed claim that the US is the worlds number one emitter is just that... wrong ! Fact is as much as 7-12 percent of whats measured over the US is generated in Canada. Throw in the fact that many nations like Mexico, Thailand, and China lack the technology to accurately measure their emissions, and there ya go... the US must be the worst. It's no wonder Americans tend to ignore the rest of the planet. My suggestion is just that, let the Americans take care of their business and the rest of the world should do likewise. When you all have figured out how to reach protocol type figures in a couple of years like Seattle Washington did... give us a ring, better yet, don't bother... the phone is off the hook, too many prank calls.

"The Obama administration wants a politically viable new global climate deal that avoids the fate of the Kyoto Protocol, which failed to win U.S. domestic support, a senior U.S. official said Friday."
Not to mention the embarrasing results by those nations that did ratify it. Countries like Canada, Japan, the whole of the EU, etc. either bailed out of their responsibilities, failed to meet their responsibilities, or just plain lied about their results. In the meantime American cities were reaching Kyoto Protocol type numbers on their own, reducing emissions by 8% or more. Time for the world to stop the America bashing and worry about themselves a whole lot more. Especially Japan... the host of this failed program.

Once again leave it to McDonalds to show the Japanese how to attract customers and get them to spend. Any word from Asahi, the other corporation to sponsor team Japan ?

"Ichiro didn’t want to spend time talking about jealous teammates"
Isn't this an opinion best left for the "letters to the editor" section ? And shouldn't the author spend the first part of this story explaining the background behind this opinion ? I follow the Mariners very closely, I've never heard or witnessed anything to do with jealousy in the clubhouse at anytime.

"A perfect ending to a very imperfect tournament."
Well there ya have it, not much of a vote of confidence. Fact is, as is, the WBC is nothing more than "Fake Gucci". It looks good from a distance but the closer you look, well... theres a whole lot of shoddyness about. Lets take the quality of play in general. The vast majority of games were blow-outs. Teams that brought their MLB all-stars along failed miserably. Costa Rica, Venezuela, Dominican Republic. Individual stars also looked foolish, I mean Ichiro goes 0 fer 5 against China ? The semi finals were a joke. Two games and double digit errors ? And really now, can you think of any "world class" play at anytime ? The best play I saw was the Korean shortstop going behind the second base bag to rob a Venezuelan hitter during the first semi finale.
Now getting back to my "fake gucci" comparison. Make no mistake, some people are satisfied with fake gucci, I mean just look at the Japanese masses that have bought into this tournement hook line and sinker... and who am I to rain on their parade. But for media outlets to keep going on and on in an attempt to sell me fake Gucci, well, you've crossed the line. I'm a baseball guy, I can talk stats, strategy, history whatever. And the fact is, this WBC monkey simply won't juggle ! They're gonna have to move it as fa away from the spring training calendar as possible before this becomes legit. I for one am happy the Americans didn't fall for the hype. The team they sent was adequate for such a minor tournement. Fan interest waned for obvious reasons and fortunately Americas real superstars stayed away. Imagine Ryan Howard limping out of the WBC like the Central league home run champion Murata did. What a disaster ! Nope, the headline says it all... nothing but "potential" trying to say the tourney has arrived is silly.
