davidattokyo, whale population increased due to the careful preservation effort done over the years, you are not about to support turning that around aren't you?

Isn't there a way to educate the whalers and consumers on the declining whale population. I am sure the whales are equally worried about their demography. Eat something else please.

If the big 3 were allowed to fail, those who remained in the industry will have a bigger part to play. The J auto makers may benefit tremenduosly if they can emerge from this financial slump relatively unscathed.

J ladies look better in JT because of this male-bonding session we are having now. I must admit my perspective is heavily influenced by all the pretty J-pop idols to an extend I have this bias that J ladies are always better looking.

Students or individual can change but their effort can be shortlived and ineffective if the larger environment is already tainted. In order to effectively overhaul the entire system, the change has to come from the very top, only they have the power to make sweeping and far reaching changes. Leaders should set a good example and use it to influence the entire society.

rgetty, I agree that our increasing drive to consume more is not sustainable. You and I today may discipline ourselves to consume less, but our employers on the other hand are sure to make us sell more to the consumers, so it is really a dilemma we all are facing. Corporate performance and the global economic growth engine is one which is measured on ever increasing profits, surely we can't tell our employers that we should all do less.

This tariff on imported agriculture produce seems like a major distortion to Japan's economy. Is it true that the government protect the local rice industry because it is a matter of national security?

I heard experiment shows that even animals prefer to eat partially rotten natural fruits instead of healthy looking GM fruits.
