One thing that's going to make it easier is that China's rise isn't going to be at the fast pace it's been. With an export driven economy and all of their global customers in recession you can bet growth will be in the single digits for at least the next decade.

The stock market always looks 6 months ahead. The stock market has bottomed. The recession will be over in 6 months. Hence, China will become VERY IMPORTANT 6 months from now.

Is that the day they decide to jump infront of a train?

No. Some people become very sad on the day they die, for no apparent reason.

If I were in such a situation as the article described, I would probably invest in starting a hot dog stand, or take out a loan to start one.

Most likely the woman condescended to him, thus magnifying his feeling of "inferiority".

This is just like the Swiss-made Swatch Casino Royale watch... No relevance to the actual movie, but still, very stylish...

"I dont like that segement of Japanese society that is clearly trying to imitate another race."

Rather than using the word "imitate", try "blending in" (As in how most Japanese women dye their hair to look Caucasian to blend in with the rest of the developed world, and not a form of self-racism).

Makes perfect sense. Prolong useless war with Iraq in order to establish permanent military presence, then use it as the command center for war.

In many Asian countries and some Caribbean island communities, you can purchase items on debt. What the retailer does is keep a book of who owes him what... Not sure if this qualifies as social lending though...

The men are nothing but walking wallets. Those with money get the female while those without eat snow!! I suggest a full covering of hair and strenuous exercize for all of these "snow bunnies"!!

Tsk tsk... Well, I guess you've never heard of the dilemma posed in the movie, Bulletproof Monk: "Why do hot dogs come in packages of 10, while hot dog buns come in packages of just eight?... See, the thing is, life doesn't always work out according to plan so be happy with what you've got, because you can always get a hot dog."

As for the cosplayers, they can have it; not my cup of tea personally. Too much escapism doesn't do society any good. And robots and video games can't solve everything. One thing for sure...

Power in the modern world is measured by how many eyeballs you command. Strip Japan of anime, video games, cosplay, and in a few quick years, a generation will spring up not knowing anything about Japan, or the Japanese people.
