I think that's poor advice. If you're going to see it, see it in the theatre in 3D and enjoy the extraordinary visuals. Otherwise just skip it completely - if you're going to see it for the plot and characterisation then you're certainly going to be disappointed. Watching it at home will remove all the good bits and leave all the rubbish.

It's hilarious that some people are criticising the victim here. She was felt up on the train by a policeman. She reported it and got him arrested. What more do you want from her????

He is above the age of criminal responsibility and he will be tried. They just can't name him that's all. Personally, I don't think that's so unreasonable given that at this stage he remains a suspect, not a convict. That said, assuming he did it, lets hope he gets punished to the full extent of the law and doesn't just get a suspended sentence.

I can't speak Chinese either but I can usually recognise it when I hear it. Same goes for German, Italian, Spanish, Russian etc.

It doesn't say he can't be charged, it says he can't be named. Big difference.

It's not a waste of tax money - a lot of those being groped are basically children and you can hardly blame them for not being brave enough to speak up.

It doesn't say that he made 119 calls, it says several a month. And it doesn't say that the young lad made them, just that the police are - quite reasonably - investigating.
And of course the dispatcher should send police to the scene of a reported crime.

Gavin is absolutely right. Baker may or may not be innocent but his story that he was visiting Japan for a pre-world cup tour of stadiums is the least convincing thing I've ever heard. When he said that I automatically assumed that he was lying.

The court was presumably asked to believe that a 30-ish father of limited financial means (I believe he's a gardener of some kind) took a holiday, without his family, to a far-flung and notoriously expensive destination, with the purpose of buying souvenirs for a tournament that he wasn't even planning to attend??? I've never in my life met anyone who's ever done such a thing and I'm a football daft Brit of the same age as Baker who has attended the last 6 World Cups and European Championships. In fact, I've never met a 30 year old British father who has visited Japan full-stop, unless they already know people here. This just doesn't happen. Drugs or not, in my opinion he was almost certainly lying through his teeth about his reason for visiting Japan, which makes me doubt his whole story.

His own mum even stops short of saying that he's innocent - “Of course people have to be punished....." “For whatever he has done, he has paid the ultimate price.”

Regarding the prison conditions, 6 years in virtual solitary is inhumane, particularly for a non-violent criminal.

I think the point regarding the PhD guy is that as taxpayers we should all be more than a little bit irritated that the government is funding someone for 10 years, making him into a valuable asset, and then willing to risk letting him go somewhere else. If 10 years, Japanese fluency, a PhD and a Japanese spouse isn't enough to qualify for permanent residence then what is? Makes very little sense either from an economic or common sense perspective.

I already posted to this effect once, but if you've seen one of these "badges" then you'll have a lot more sympathy for these women. All this talk of the language issue is a red herring - of course it's unreasonable to expect the police to speak fluent English, but that's not really the point. They simply MUST be able to identify themselves as officers with something that they couldn't have bought at a 100 yen shop. Personally, I'm happy to show my ID to someone who looks as though he has a right to see it. I'm not happy to produce it to some bozo in jeans who could be absolutely anyone.

In the case of these women, having reached the police station they should have just shown their passports and gotten on with their day. It doesn't change the fact, though, that in virtually any other situation one would caution against handing over important documents to someone unidentifiable. In fact, in most countries I'm pretty certain THE POLICE would advise that for all sorts of reasons - first world passports are potentially valuable commodities, identity theft is becoming more and more common, and not least because if you lose your passport it's a right royal pain in the behind.

Hughgarse - the victim was released after 1 hour, not the criminal.

For me, the problem here is that the polthese police were clearly unable to satisfactorily identify themselves as police officers. I had a similar experience and actually laughed when the "officer" produced his ID. It's basically a plastic card with a photo and the word "Police", in English, and NOTHING else. No name, no ID number, not even any convincing looking seals, Japanese writing, stamps etc. Looks like a 10 year old made it. I presume (as pointed out above) that this "ID" is for the benefit of foreigners and is not their actual ID, but frankly it wasn't until I spotted a gun that I actualy believed they were police.

If you're going to randomly stop foreigners and demand papers you simply MUST be able to identify yourself in a satisfactory way. This doesn't necessarily require liguistic fluency, but it does surely require a common sense approach - perhaps a card in half a dozen languages explaining the purpose of the check, and offering the option to stroll to the koban to see some uniforms if necessary.
