He will be remembered as a popular star of the 80s with little long-lasting influence.

BurakuDes - thanks for your witty posts on things. The following is a quotation from and editorial in today's (London) Times (OK Mod?):
"...facially reconstructed lady boy who prances about making high-pitched squeals while scratching his crotch like some gibbon with a bad case of fleas."
"Try humming thriller. You can't. It's dirge and the melody goes nowhere."

realist:
I sad to see that your in-depth knowledge of Japan meant that you did not consider it necessary to read the article fully. The article states that office space in Japan is the world's most expensive. At no point does it comment on the quality of office space. It does go on to discuss the quality of life, placing it at no.3, which like you, I would dispute.
These comparative costs of office or rental space are usually very silly, often having more to do with exchange rates and the American view of the world.
In the last year, pound sterling has weakened against the USD and the JPY has strengthened. Lo and behold, London is off top spot and Tokyo takes it!
The other "most expensive place to live" surveys are also silly, viewing the world from the point of view of an American. The question should be "what is the world's most expensive city to live the lifestyle of a middle class American executive." Tokyo, with its lack of spacious apartments, is always going to be considered expensive if one is included in the index of goods.

Can I say the unsayable? I did not care for MJ's music and cannot name anyone from my contempories who ever was a fan. He did not invent pop music, but he did produce the most popular music of the 1980s. However, how often do you actually hear Jackson songs being played nowadays (prior to his death)? Hardly ever.
When I was growing up in the late 80s, Jackson was music for early teens, housewives or easy listening fans (sorry for the ageism, sexism and elitism) and by the 90s, he became a laughing stock.

He made sure that his own children did not have to go through the same, by breeding white children. They almost appear to have skipped right out Sweden or somewhere, rather than looking like typical mixed race kids.

No only has the world lost a great performer, 3 young children have lost their father.
They have had a hard upbringing, dealing with his eccentricites, and looking completely caucasion, despite having an African American genetic father.

"however, i think much of this could be averted if people here actually learn how to swim outside of a 1m pool."
Junior High School swimming pools are never deeper that a metre and I presume many learn to swim in such pools. Here is a little piece from JT on this topic:
"Police said the pool was 90 cm deep and the girl dived from a 25 cm-high diving block as part of practice for a swimming competition which was scheduled to be held by the local city council on Thursday."
Diving blocks by 90cm pools - only in Japan...

2500 yen has been the going rate for a J-CD since the mid-90s. In Britain the price has virtually halved.
Oh, and this "double" thing is just irritating beyond belief. If "haafu" is considered demeaning, it is because the very concept of mixed race children is looked down upon. "Haafe" is otherwise a pretty good word and the standard word used in English for informal descriptions of mixed-race people. Remember, a half and half makes a whole.

If there were any evidence for this, it would be accepted as fact. Unfortunately there is not, and the above claims are almost certainly false.

No - that is just one example, which can only have annecdotal value. Japan, despite its high rates of smoking and heavy drinking, still has the highest life expectancy in the world. Smoking is damaging to health, clearly a factor, but perhaps not as significant as diet in life expectancy.

Japanese seem to think that gay men all fit the stereotype of a mincing, squealing ladyboy and yet they are often quite oblivious to fairly obviously gay men who do not conform to television's stereotype.

Surely a bit of "socialism" would help America's over-priced, divisive healthcare system.
If I were to choose a healthcare system from a "blind" position i.e. not knowing if I was rich or poor, healthy or unhealthy, then I would not choose that of the US.

When Hiroshima had been wiped out days before, why did the Japanese authorities not take the only action left to it and surrender unconditionally? Further resistence was clearly futile.

GM is basically 2 companies - the one that makes reasonably good brands overseas and the one that makes fuel-guzzling rust-buckets for the US market that no one else in the world would touch with a ten foot barge pole.
The same goes for Ford.
The only wonder is why the US market was happy to be fobbed off with rubbish for so long.
