If you are new to Japanese, this book will probably do the job. But it is a waste of money. Just buy a kana book and learn hiragana too. Should not take long.

    So who uses Windows anyway?

Is this another way of saying:

"Hey look at me! I've got a Mac and I am just sooo cool. Look at you with your PCs, you repressed hypocrites. I have a lovely Mac. It may just be a step up from a Fisher Price child's "computer" and have one button on the mouse, but it says a load about my personality. Anyway, I need to go out and buy a really large double latte decaff."

Anyway, thank God I did not go anywhere near Vista. No one could explain what it did that was special anyway. Even on XP by Explorer is now defunct and any attempt to upgrade Media Player renders it useless.

Perhaps I should switch to a Mac - apparently they never crash.

I have always erred on the side of sceptics and require proof for things, but there is another way of looking at it:

    1) Man made global warming is a fact - Outcomes: a) change behaviour, save the earth b) ignore, be a sceptic, ruin the planet

    2) Global warming is a myth Outcomes: a) change behaviour, mildly inconvenience yourself b) ignore, be a sceptic, find out that you were right all along and the irritating environmentalist were just whingeing do-gooders.

So the outcomes are either 1a or 2a OR 2a or 2b. Or a case of better be sage than sorry.

Japan would add no value to the security council and would not like the burden of making controversial decisions. J

Simply having (for now) the world's 2nd largest economy is not in itself a qualification for a permanent UN seat. If anyone is to get a seat, it should be India. However, Pakistan would kick up too much of a fuss.

The US and European economies are going to sink, dragging the exporters of Asia and South America with them. I think the effect on Japan will be worse than the recession years of the 90s.

And her next goal will be to look cute and get married before 25.

I see the "Christmas Cake" myth still lives on among gaijin. This is 2008 not 1988!

I love the way he makes a pack of grown men (including police) flee in terror by being...nakled (14 seconds in). Then evades capture after being surrounded by 4 J-police with long sticks and riot shields by running away and jumping in the water (50 sec in)!

Why the 50 police? just ignore him - he will get cold and get out in the end. No need to tazer or shoot him.

The economic uncertainty is without doubt the most significant global event for decades. The endless headlines on that Palin woman and the US election are nothing compared to this. While this subject is relegated to an insignificant story about the Nikkei, the coming storm is going to shape politics and economics for years to come.

Confusing question and it seems to have been interpreted as one about CNN and Fox, whereas "media" should include all media, such as print, internet, radio and TV.

Most people want straight "news" to be neutral, but are happy to seek out newspapers that support their point of view.

Hooray for common sense. Formal education that early is an absolute waste of time and probably does more harm than good.

Even in formal schooling, children acquire kanji at a fairly slow pace for a good reason - their brains are not able to cope with them at that age. An adult is actually much better equipped, in my opinion, and can learn in a week what the ichi-nen-sei learns in a year.

If the blame lies anywhere, with one individual, it is with Alan Greenspan. He had interest rates down at 1% during what were quite clearly still boom years in 2003 and 2004 and brought them up so slowly over the next few years that the whole complexion of the money markets changed.

The returns on cash were negligible that investors needed to chase higher returns. At the same time, people who could never have afforded loans suddenly could - after all, 1% on $1m is only $10,000 and affordable to the poor.

This created the perfect conditions for the storm that followed.

Politics, in the sense it is understood in the West, does not exist. What do the parties stand for? What are the issues that raise the public's emotions? Questions I cannot answer.

Posted in: Japan is a country where people have no interest in politics. When I went to America, everybody seemed to like their country. It was like ‘Go America!’ But we don’t have that in Japan. The attitude here is ‘Who cares? As long as I’m happy.’

London's top art galleries are all free as well.

For food at about $10 for main courses, try the Stockpot restaurants. They have been around since the 1960s, I think. There is one in the Kings Road, Old Compton Street, Panton St and possibly Neal Steet. A great mixture of tasty Italian and British food. There is also something similar behind Selfridges.

Mods - 8 of the 10 threads in the "popular topics" section on the homepage are related to the US election. While this is of great interest to some, and mild interest to many, this is a Japan site.

Would there be away of highlighting those topics about Japan which are popular and segregating those from stories from the international news section?
