Not so long ago, I had to walk past a group of girls at the station who were all sitting on the stairs going up at the end of the platform. They had all had short skirts on and were all sitting on about the 10th step with their skirts at about eye-height to a man. Skirts below the knee conceal little in this postion.
They must have been doing it quite deliberately - to attract the eyes of men trying to walk down the platform and also to embarrass them. It certainly worked.

For years Japan has led the way in cell phone technology, being well ahead of Europe, which was itself ahead of the US.
The iphone is a pretty thing, but it does not have functionality that is particularly new or innovative to the Japanese, but rather stuff they have had for years. The touch screen is innovative, but I expect other phones to have that in the near future.

The one guaranteed way to make anyone eat a bowl of ramen is to get them to watch "Tampopo". After a couple of hours of mouth-watering scenes of ramen preparation you can think of, and do nothing else until you get a bowl.
This could be very inconvenient if, for example, your waters break, so I would advise pregnant women to avoid the movie, unless they want to risk delivering in a noodle restaurant and having to call the brat "Charshu".

If you like ramen and are ever in the UK, DO NOT venture into the Wagamama ramen chain.

**(Not) good to see JR taking action after the horse has bolted. The victim should sue the guy who did this for everything he has. She should also take JR to the cleaners for their negligence in not providing a safe workplace.
By your litigious thoughts, I can only assume that you are American. A dangerous workplace in this sense would be a train where the brakes did not work or the doors flew open while in motion. With the best will in the world, it is difficult to design a workplace to prevent a violent criminal from attacking you (other than a prison, maybe).

Oh no! I only ever went on the Mainichi site for one reason - WaiWai and now it has gone.
The translations, and particularly the headlines, were superb.
While they have been accused of portraying Japan in a bad light, they were actually translations of what is available in the popular press in Japan anyway. If you want to see very dull new stories about Japan, you do not need to look very far. I mean, who actually ever logs on to the Asahi News site? Anyway, here is a link to the withdrawl notification:
http://mdn.mainichi.jp/culture/waiwai/
My feeling is that WaiWai will be reborn somewhere else. The prudes who hated it can have a clean Mainichi, but I want my Waiwai!!
Posted in: What do you think of the Mainichi's decision to cease publishing its WaiWai tabloid tidbits section on its English online site following complaints that it portrays Japanese society in a negative light to the world?

They are already showing the ad in Britain. It is cringeworthy, apart from the surreal appearance of Arnold Schwarzenneger at the end, which somehow manages to rescue it.

Please, can we ban the term "metabolic syndrome". Why say in 6 syllables what you can say in just one: FAT.

You mean we should give up our seats for the drunk and disorderly in Japan? Well I never, just shows how different their culture is.

Yes, I think that to be called a Gaijin is wrong and racist. The correct term is Gai kokujin. Japanese do not understand how rude they can be when addressing foreigners as gaijin and if they do so knowing well what they are saying, they do it with no respect as the Japanese are inherently a racist culture.
Well not many seem to agree with you here. Why is the "correct" term gaikokujin? What makes it correct? The only reason I ever thought the term rude and abusive was because some helpful gaijin told me it was, but then I met Japanese people using the term without any perjoritive inflection and I knew it was not really the case.

I learnt to read with Crayon Shin-chan. The manga were superb (and the earlier books are the better IMO). The humour is grown up and sometimes "adult" and all kanji have furigana to help a struggling gaijin.

Guys, guys, guys. I think the stereotyping here is going a little too far don't you think ? I am married to a Japanese woman and I am attracted to Asian girls. However, I can think of scores of Japanese ladies who you would not want a serious relationship with and I can think of scores of reasons why dating a western woman would be more fun and attractive.
Good post, northlondon. In your shoes (well southlondon actaully), and agree with the sentiment. But still, it does not matter where they come from or what language they speak, they can all say, "If you don't know what's wrong, it's not worth telling you!"
It is the international phrase of the sulking woman. It was probably first muttered in the stone age.

The question here specifies English-speaking countries and we should remember that plenty of other countries also commonly dub American films - France for instance.

Surely the mother would have dialled 119 immediately and an ambulance would have come to take the child straight to a casualty unit? Instead the father had time to go home and then take the boy to hospital? Unless the father worked only a stone's throw away from the apartment, this seems very suspicious.
LFRAgain: The article does not state that the mother ignored the son for 3h20m, but rather that she was doing the washing at the time of the incident.

The costs of not having more children are so high that Japan cannot afford not to pay a bit more to at least get the birth rate back up.
A lot of the reasons given above, other than financial ones, are terribly modern - none that stopped my in-laws growing up in families of 6 and 7 children in the '50s.
However, costs are an enormous impediment in an already-expensive society. The state should bear the costs of birth and provide continual financial support to the age of 18 so that the costs of a child do not put parents off - remove the stick but do not provide a carrot.
Most couples do want children and usually they want more than one. Allow them to have them.
