So where does Australia and New Zealand fit in to all this? Surely Japan can be Western if Australia wants to be.
Actually, has Australia made up its mind on this yet for that matter?

Capone is right. Japanese financial services remain just that - financial services for the Japanese market. Just as Japan does not consider itself part of "Asia", increasingly neither does the rest of the world, to Japan's detriment.
Japan can still claim to be the world's second largest economy, which will keep at the centre of things for years to come, but the country is in economic long-term decline and it is likely to lose its "2nd largest" status to China in 10-15 years.
London has become a success through deregulation and allowing foreign institutions to properly establish themselves in the markets, something that it is hard to do in Tokyo. And then there is the matter of being able to speak English...

Let's give the woman some compassion
Well said. I cannot understand how this could have happened, but that very same mother would probably have said the same if it had been her reading this story about a different mother and child. No parent is perfect all of the time and all suffer from lapses of concentration and judgement. The challenge of holding a 5-year-old boy's hand non-stop is one that few would win.
"outofmydepth" - I suspect you are.
Most of those who claim that they could never let this happen are either not being totally honest with themselves or are bringing up over-protected kids.

JR asks mothers to fold up the buggies, but fails to mention what to do with the infant. If the train is so crowded that it is necessary to fold it up, then the mother would be lucky to get a seat, in which case the mother would be forced to hold a baby/infant in her arms on a moving train, which sounds very dangerous as it could result in the baby being dropped or crushed.

**Wow - it is really open season on Murakami here. I never had any idea of the revulsion he inspired.
However, it would be nice to have a character who did not listen to jazz for once - giving them the novelist's own musical taste is rather unimaginative, adds little, if anything, to the story lines, and is repetitive.

In imperial, that equates to less than 34 inch waste. Unless you are a giant in Japan, that certainly makes you a little overweight, but hardly obese.
Note that Lennox Lewis, the former world boxing champion, fought with a 34in waist and is over 6'5ft tall (195cm), which I understand is pretty typical.
Posted in: I'm worried that the overweight will be shunned in the workplace and these new rules will make no one want to hire them.

How do you do quotations, bold and italics when writing a post?

distressing to hear about vox pop being rested - it is one of the things that is special about this site and seeing new ones is one of the reasons I keep coming back.
the new logo is not as cool, but I guess I will get used to it.
Quote of the day is worth leaving in full on the front page. By number of posts it is clearly a popular feature. Have it in the space with the Japan Today poll, which takes up too much room anyway, and move everything else down. The right-hand column is the emptiest anyway.
Emails from JT have started going into my spam box (or "Bulk" as Yahoo calls it) whereas they never have before.
