Just to reiterate my earlier post, the lack of autopsies is down to the Japanese attitude to death. Only the buraku-min have traditionally dealt with the dead and it is a relatively taboo subject. For a high status position like a doctor to deal with dead people is something of a contradiction. I suspect the average Japanese would choose becoming a dentist over becoming a doctor who deals exclusively with the dead (not trying to knock dentists).

The Nishi Nishi Shimbun must know this, but it is the elephant in the room.

It sounds like a pretty typical episode of Top Gear - I think Nissan are being over-sensitive. TG is a comedy programme based around cars and an electric car is an easy target.

I think TG may now claim to be the world's most popular tv show and Nissan could do with some publicity that does not concern how unreliable their cars have become since Renault took over and started sharing parts and technology.

Roaches love wine, but do not handle it very well. Put some in a saucer and let them drink their fill. They do not know when to stop drinking and can be found dead either in the wine or within a foot the next day.

I expect sake would work well, too.

They really should upgrade the charges for "Leaving your kids to die in the car while you play pachinko" to 1st degree murder. I'm getting sick and tired of reading this headline over and over and over.

What good will that do? Do you really think that Katsuhiko would have turned to Hisako and said,

"Hisa-chan, I know we are having a great time in here, but what about the law? If our baby dies, we will get done for murder, whereas in the past it was only neglect. Personally, I would have taken the risk and stayed for a few more hours, because if she dies it would only be a neglect charge, which I am cool with. But no way am I risking a murder charge for our daughter over a trifling matter of her dying in the back of the car!"

They are clearly stupid, gambling addicts, but not murderers. The message about not leaving children and animals in cars is probably not played out loudly enough. It is getting the population educated that is key. Perhaps a law against leaving children alone in cars could be enforced. Pachinko parlours could be made part responsible for children left in cars on their property - that would make sure the parlours check properly.

So very sad, but not entirely unexpected. A voice like hers only comes along once in a generation and now its gone.

The effects of being abroad show very young.

My daughter (half Japanese) was in her playgroup in Japan as a toddler and there was another girl, fully Japanese, who had lived abroad. Despite being of the age where they were too young to meaningfully communicate, they were soon drawn to each other. They were probably unaware of what they had in common, but their foreign experience drew them together.

Foreign experience make such a difference. Why are so many Japanese scared of it?

Posted in: My advice for young Japanese is simple: get out of Japan. One of our weaknesses as Japanese is our ineptness at communicating with other cultures. Even people who speak English well are closed off psychologically.

AerosX - perhaps you have not read Keynes, but rather posts concerning Keynes on sites dedicated Austrian school economic theory. You state that Keynesianism does not have a business cycle, whereas "General theory..." is largely dedicated to the concept.

You have the common misunderstanding that Keynesianism is all about running perpetual government deficits. It is not. Keynes made the greatest advances in the understanding of economics since Adam Smith. Your ignorance of him means that you will never understand economics. My recommendation is to read him yourself and then reject it if you want based on a genuine understanding.

More Abrahamist radicals killing innocents for their perfect view of God.

What? Is this your bizarre interpretation of events? There is no evidence of any link to religion, and as a neo-Nazi, it seems quite unlikely that he had any religious motive. We have an extremist and probably one that had slipped from holding extreme views into insanity which led to a violent interpretation of his views.

Comments such as this are unhelpful and inflammatory.

I am part of a British study into long-term cell phone usage and cancer. The first results have been that cell phone use does not cause cancer, but the tests will continue for decades.

But let's face it, even if it did cause cancer, it is worth the risk. A bit like drinking too much.

I support "traditional" whaling in Japan - you can eat your traditional food as long as you catch it in a "traditional" boat i.e. a 3 metre wooden thing with oarsman and a harpoonist who has to throw into into the whale. If everything is "traditional", we will then see exactly how much the Japanese want their traditional food.

This is the problem with so-called "traditional" things - they are cherry-picked from history. Traditionally a Japanese would have been lucky to have had rice or fish, mostly surviving on a vegetarian diet of buckwheat and a few vegetables. Now they demand weekly tuna sashimi has a birthright.

My Heinz Tomato Ketchup says to refrigerate after opening and consume within 8 weeks. Ridiculous! I can leave in a cupboard for a year and it will be fine - it is full of vinegar, a great preservative.

If you hit someone, they fall and break their head open and die, the presumption would have to be manslaugher - your action was only indrectly responsible for the death.

If you strangle someone, an act which everyone knows will bring about death, the presumption would have to be the intent to kill. In such cases it would be up to you to demonstrate that you did not intend to kill, which might work in the context of a concensual "adult game", but not in the circumstance of a kidnapping and rape.

It is easy to show remorse after the event, but he did not show very much while on the run.

...Japan's twisted justice system which could reward him with accidental death and abandonment of corpse which will give him a few years at best.

CapnSinbad, I hope you are not right. Strangling is not "accidental" - it can only be considered a wilful killing. In Britain a sexually aggravated murder has a starting tarrif of about 30 years in prison. I would hope that Japan, even at its most indulgent, would still have to impose half that.

I like the fact that the US still uses the Imperial measures - it reminds them every day of their history as part of the British Empire.

After dumping the traditional method of travel on the left of the road to travelling in the French Revolutionary right, I am glad that they did not go the whole hog and take on all the new modern French methods.

America does use metric for some things - the dollar is made up of 100c. The old British pound was made up of 20 shillings. Each shilling was made up 12 pence. I think that they should adopt this as well. The "cent" is based on the French "centime" and is clearly socialist.

Obama must be praying she gets the Republican nomination. The rest of the world will also enjoy her antics over the next 2 years.

American presidential elections are perpetual - we only just seem to have finished one and the next one is starting already. Having light relief in the shape of Palin, makes it all so much better. It also gives non-Americans the chance to be smug about not being American for a while.

This reminds me of the CD v. vinyl debate. There are still plenty of vinyl fans out there, who stay loyal to the format and film with have a hold over a certain sector of the camera market.

I have a decent film SLR and zoom lens knocking about. The SLR is worthless, but the lens has retained its value.

If FIFA were a country, it would probably be a corrupt Middle Eastern oil state, where the ruling class/family keep the masses happy with every larger handouts, as long as they keep quiet and do not rock the boat (or should that be "gravy train".

In fact, it sounds a lot like Qatar. Now, that is a coincidence.

The decision to hand Qatar the 2022 World Cup was so clearly a corrupt decision that it is not even worth bothering with an investigation. Too hot, too small, limited facilities, nothing to see, no history of football etc. etc.
