Frankly, I think everyone needs as much normalcy as they can get right now, not just kids. Including people closely affected by the disaster. Amid the loss, sadness, and fear, people need to be able to escape and remember it wasn't always like this, nor will it always be. I'd love some commercials for instant ramen, even if I can't buy it at the store right now.

I don't understand why they feel the need to fill commercial time with commercials "which incur no advertising charge." There's no financial incentive, and clearly people don't want to see them anymore. They should just fill that time with a live cam of Tokyo or someplace with some background music.

I was there in Yamada earlier this week with my wife to check on her family and deliver a car full of food and goods. Luckily her immediate family are all fine and their house was a meter or two high enough to be untouched. Most of the town was built up on the low lying flats with almost nothing but trees on the higher ground. What I wonder is, how will people rebuild? Stubbornly rebuild on the same ground, or leave that to agriculture and move higher up?

I think a lot of people feel obligated to express outrage at these sorts of things in order to affirm to themselves their own moral fortitude.

That said, the idea of a guy going home, turning up the 5.1 surround, pouring some shochu, and popping in this DVD is pretty funny.

One thing clear from the comments, they have a long way to go.

skipthesong, your problem is an inability, or unwillingness, to differentiate between the millions of Muslims out there. Some Muslims do some things you (rightfully) don't like, and then treat all other Muslims the same as you would those bad apples. It's intellectually lazy, and while that works out fine for you yourself, others out there suffer who are subjected to your stereotypes and intolerance.

And yes, I do think they would allow churches and Jewish temples in their California community. Although I assume by "they" you meant to suggest all those mean Muslims overseas, in which case the answer is no, but they're not the party in question here.

skipthesong, would I support a you putting up a church, Jewish temple in the same neighorhood? Yes, of course. Why in the world wouldn't I? Their right to worship their own religion is protected equally.

People say they're fine with Muslims as long as they worship peacefully and moderately, and then fight tooth and nail to prevent them from doing so in their communities. This is a big win for sanity and fairness.

apecNetworks, it's nice that you were a key member in something really important about which you can't say, but bragging about it to us here doesn't add anything to the discussion.

At a time when the US is looking to wrap things up in Afghanistan and scale down defense spending, this is just wishful thinking for these "analysts." They're too used to viewing the US as an arrogant war machine. They love to hate. The current trend threatens how they want to view the US. Hence their gracious offer of advice.

Just slap a piece of raw fish on rice. This ignores the work in seeking out the best ingredients, presentation, and service. Regardless, a Michelin stars do not indicate difficulty. One star: hard, two stars: very hard, three stars: insane?

Religion is just a product of culture and nationalism. People like to say that religion causes wars (crusades!!), but religion is only the proximate cause. Even if you could somehow remove religion, it'd still be righteous us versus backward them who don't deserve such riches.

TimRussert is exercising intellectual dishonesty by suggesting this is the Democratic party line. I think you're smart enough to realize that just because Obama is currently President doesn't mean he controls everything that every part of the government does. Typically conservatives have pushed for security over liberty (Patriot Act, water boarding, wire tapping, etc), while liberals have been the opposite. Unfortunately, you're too religiously anti-Obama to give any worthwhile analysis.

"Don't like the security? Don't fly."

I love this one, it's comical. You can apply it to anything. Don't like your job? Don't work. Don't like the President? Leave the country. Don't like cold weather? Stay inside. Technically not flying is an option (and some take it), but for the majority of fliers, get real.

m5c32- "ick" is subjective and everyone has their own boundaries. What's fine for you isn't fine for everyone. What I'm saying is, opposition to this comes from more than a question of civil liberties or even convenience.

m5c32- all of that is irrelevant I think. It shows people what strangers (TSA agents) are looking at and gives people a better idea of what's being done to them. It's the ick factor.

I don't think these scans and pat-downs will survive. Forget about defining it in terms of civil liberties, it's simply indecent and vaguely lewd. Released images of basically nude Americans on the web are especially damning. Opposition is bipartisan and will only build. Debate on liberty vs security can go on forever, but this issue hits people on a much less intellectual level: it's gross.
