I agree with ritalynn. It seems to me like the police went overboard on this. There's no signs of him being violent. He just got on stage when he shouldn't have.

The new grocery store is understandably an annoyance, but it won't do to not build grocery stores. Just what kind of gift would placate the writer? Though the monetary value of a towel is cheap, frankly I think it's good enough that the construction company recognized the inconvenience they'd be causing. That's more the point, to say they're sorry, than to actually compensate.
In the case of the wallet for example, I feel that expecting a significant percentage of reward money cheapens the kindness of returning it. It's just getting paid for a job done. Likewise, if the gift giver is simply following well established gift giving rules, it's not longer a sign of genuine appreciation. It's like just paying a bill.

Monkeyz,
A doughnut or two? Are you kidding? The box fits a dozen, not one or two. Who says "Oh, I think I'll bring a little baggie of a donut or two to work, and maybe share it with one person, or not." No, they say "I'll go buy a BOX of a DOZEN donuts and share them with everyone, building office harmony and goodwill." God even created a special word for it: dozen! Not one or two, or something so common as "twelve". And there's so many kinds of donuts, you have yo buy at least one dozen. Glazed, cookie green tea, green tea matcha, flower rings, chocolate frosted, cream filled, chocolate cream filled, jelly, plain, powdered, and bear claws too.
Everybody loves donuts. I know I do.

I thought the brevity imposed by the 140 character limit was part of the appeal of Twitter. Not so in Japan?

Azrael,
Not sure what about Wii Fit is a simulation. If you're doing yoga in Wii Fit, you're doing real yoga. If you're doing pushups in Wii Fit, you're doing real pushups.
While Wii Fit is surely a solitary exercise, the other game mentioned in the article, Wii Sports is known as a great party game. It's silly to complain and moan about people playing the game alone, when no one even wants to play it alone. The article is just too far removed from reality.

arrestpaul-
Do you really think Japan did nothing? I think there's sufficient evidence here that Japan is bribing in one way or another (in several ways, probably).
Also, I'm not making the argument that one side can bribe and the other can't. Not sure where you got that.

arrestpaul,
There's a debate to be had about whether the research Japan brings in is worthwhile (worth the cost of hundreds of whales, whether it's really motivated by science, etc). The point here is that Japan shouldn't fight against legitimate concerns with bribes. (You say it's secondary, but it's primary in regard to this article and discussion.)

This is garbage. Sometimes it's raining outside, or it's night. Besides that, the author didn't consider that in the real world you could both own a Wii AND enjoy exercise and sports outside.

OssanAmerica- it doesn't really matter which side invented vote-buying in this. It shouldn't be done by any country. You say whaling should be argued on the merits of real science, but the issue here is exactly that it's not. It's being argued with bribes rather than with science. That should concern you.

Sorry ONKYO, a computer screen and 10mm speakers don't rival a home theater system.

Many comments' assertion that the article is apologist garbage is just wrong. The author was simply providing history and the facts of how renters see the situation. At no point does the author say that the situation is okay. He even says at the end that there are things that need to change with the times.
Don't confuse an explanation for an excuse.

Not everyone idling would restart the car if they shut it off either. For years as I walked to work in the morning, I saw a lady would drive into the parking lot, sit there smoking with the engine idling for five minutes or so, then turn it off and get out when her friend arrived. Drove me nuts, everyday.

tkoind2- Why tie one arm behind our backs? We can BOTH aim high and address the wrongness of stereotyping, while also discouraging behavior like in the article which ends up fueling stereotypes. I can appreciate the righteousness of what you're saying, but we also have to be practical about it.
Given the situation in the article, was Melissa to hold a seminar right then and there in Yebisu Garden Palace, explaining to all who witnessed the guy's outburst that it should not be taken as representative of all non-Japanese? Or would it have been better if the guy was just more mindful and toned it down? Which would be better for the cause? Of course, Melissa's seminar would have been the best; very relevant and enlightening. Very high-minded, but it's not realistic. To be practical, there's room for both approaches.

Junnama- got a point there. She also says she works to "dispel the stereotype that all us gaikokujin, or gaijin if you insist, are just loud, obnoxious barbarians." She's either contradicting herself, or maybe she thinks it's a true stereotype.
