I don't know why, but I'm kind of rooting for this guy.
Don't get caught sleeping under a CCTV camera 2 minutes walk away or by stopping at 7-11 to read manga like a Japanese suspect would. Come on, son!

You talk about Beijing, DC, Tokyo, etc as if they are 1 person. Must be nice to have a 6 year old's understanding of world politics. Ignorance is bliss. As is stupidity.

I have to admit, I got a good few laughs from Sugi-chan. Especially after a couple of vodkas. Impressive considering that he was 99% ultra-clean and light-hearted. Jokes about soda bottles, Hawaiian shirts, bicycle locks. That was a nice 1-2 month run he had there. Hope he made some nice cash.

Technological advances are always great, but even with post production filters/editing, how much clearer can movies possibly get? Especially movies like Taxi Driver that were filmed in the 1970s. Surely 35mm film is not magic, infinite quality, though it would be nice if I'm wrong.

If a gang of thugs suddenly burst out of your closet right this second, shouting and swinging weapons, no doubt you would also be to shocked to fight back or flee.
On that note, as for running over and even killing the attackers, please think with your logic and not with your emotions. It's not the same as some places in the world where home owners can legally kill intruders. As satisfying as it might be, you can't go around killing people because they stopped a motorbike in front of a car or smashed a window. Not to mention that Japanese judges and prosecutors are just looking for excuses to lock people up. If that taxi driver had pulled some destruction derby stunt in the street and killed a couple of suspects, he'd probably get the rope. At the very least, he'd never walk the streets again. Like it or not, he did the right thing by doing nothing.

Wow, you're serious? The taxi driver is a coward because he didn't suddenly spring into action, performing some crazy Hollywood movie stunt by driving over a motorbike while under attack from a group of armed men? A stunt that probably would've also gotten him fired and/or arrested? And they were certainly armed, unless one of them nutted out that window with his head.
Normal people don't go about their work or daily lives ready to defend themselves from attackers at the drop of a hat. Hindsight may be wonderful, and we'd all love the ability to pull off a stunt-filled high speed pursuit & a bunch of crazy kung-fu moves should a gang of ne'er do wells suddenly rear their inbred little heads, but none of that has any connection with the simple reality that the average person, let alone the average Tokyo taxi driver, is most definitely not Jackie Chan.

Article said he was already arrested, dumbass.
And no, offering a 17 year old money for sex is not worse than rolling up in a convoy of SUVs and murdering an judge and 20 innocent bystanders with automatic weapons in broad daylight, not by a long shot.

Funny this story should come up! I know a couple of guys who are police officers in Osaka. We were out for a few beers last night and the conversation turned to this robbery. Well, being a bit drunk they let a few details slip out.
All I can say is that this trio better leave the country asap, because it turns out Osaka's finest have a pretty much foolproof 3 step plan of action:

Nice exposure for Yahoo Auctions (not that they need it...) Hopefully he'll get a bid and have the chance to pick up some extra yen. Good for him.
It's a nice change to read about something like this instead of J-cops committing crimes, someone killing their baby, etc.

Unless there are witnesses, and even if there are, he'll probably walk unless he opens his mouth. A couple of podgy coppers shouting with rolled Rs and slapping the table is all that's required to make 99% of people start talking, though.

How is using rental cars NOT common sense? It could genuinely be anyone.

A rental car could be anyone, that's the point.
Using confiscated cars is too risky for a number of reasons. "Hey boss, remember that time we went down to Kobe to discuss import operations, and one of the guys had a burgundy Majesta with steel wheels? It's parked outside."

I love my iPhone but I still think the iPad is a glorified etch-a-sketch. Too limited to be a real laptop and too limited to be a real gaming system. Closed OS and no file system with mostly proprietary hardware. And for some reason, seems like people from western Asia and the middle east go absolutely mad over them. There's always a good half-dozen Indian lowballers with "want for buying your new perfect conditions iPad's mini for budget at less than the cost of a broken one on yahoo auctions yens isn't it?" ads on Craigslist Tokyo.
I feel like welding a kitchen sink to a hairdryer and calling it the iLaundry. Too limited to wash your clothes and too limited to dry them.

Yet another well-thought out gem from a hard-of-thinking JT regular. Damn carjackers and their 300m long extendable arms that can reach down streets and round corners and through automatic doors to blindly elbow conbini shoppers in the face with aggressive pinpoint accuracy.
Yeah. Sounds plausible.

Once an unmarked car is made, it can't be used again for stakeouts unless it is modified, repainted, etc. Huge hassle. Plus, anyone with connections can run the plate of a car and find out who or what organization the vehicle belongs to, and whether that person actually exists, their personal details if they do, etc.
Rentals can be easily identified by their plates, since all rentals have the same hiragana character, and of course they will always come back as a legit rental car registered to "Toyota Rent-A-Car Lease", for example. Common sense. Much less suspicious.

Someone who works for or owns a bar and doesn't want to leave 270,000 yen in cash there for another 12 or 13 hours until it opens up at 5-6pm (at which point, 270,000 will become 370,000, then 470,000 and so on).
If the bar's safe or tills were stolen, you'd be asking why the money was left in the bar. Can't win with some of you guys.

Of course I didn't. And nor did anyone else, I suspect, since it never actually happened. But as always, I'm totally open and welcome to being proved wrong. Is there any actual detail that you can give us? An original broadcast date, Youtube link, names of SMAP members involved with this alleged "telling off", anything at all?
Madonna is an A-list celebrity with world-class management and world-class media coaching. She does not continue to rake in tens of millions of dollars per year from overseas fans by traveling to their countries and then humiliating national icons on popular TV shows, telling people off and stomping around like an enraged dinosaur on red bull & roids.
Perhaps your version of a "telling off" was simply a bit of an underhanded, sly, amusing, and well-timed tease or joke to the rest of us?

The cumulative conviction rate has nothing at all to do with the allegations against Koike, nor anyone else's alleged (individual) wrongdoings. They are totally unrelated, unless you're implying that anyone accused of a crime here is automatically guilty simply because Japan has a high conviction rate. And that would be just silly. Let's be realistic and not sensationalist.
Not sure why some of you guys revel in reading about suspects' alleged crimes & then enjoy pouncing as if the accused is absolutely and definitely 100% guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt - in most cases, even before a basic arraignment hearing has taken place. An allegation, a face on a poster, and even an arrest is NOT a conviction. Real talk. Unfortunately, Koike died before a trial could take place and we'll never know what might have happened. Like it or not, it's a fact.
How can come of you get so riled up and throw about words like 'murderer' so confidently when he was never convicted? A face on a poster is good enough to pass a sentence? Either you guys know something us sensible and level-headed people don't know, or you know nothing at all. Know something the rest of us don't? Please post it up. I'm not too proud to admit where I'm wrong, but infinitely more important than that, the families involved are owed it.
