Amazing how a total lack of character and class can be revealed in just one statement.

@yabits: Since you are on the moral high ground, which do you think is worse. Me and my comments about the way she looks and the taste in Arnold, or him having 2 women pregnant at the same time, and having one of them in the house working for his family taking care of one of the kids. I may be bad, but I am not that bad.

@yabits: You mean your statement? Believe it or not, people have tastes. Some may find me just as unattractive, and some may not, just as I suppose they would with you. Also, it may have been a bit blunt, but looking at sakurala's comments. She said it a bit nicer.

Alphaape: beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And since the affair happened over a decade ago, she may have been more appealing. And to be honest, I think that if someone was constantly surround by beautiful and quite likely fake people, they may just want someone normal in thei life...be it a lover or a nanny :P

@sakurala: Good points. He may have been tired of all of the "beautiful people." I imagine that he probably had a long time relationship with this woman.

I saw pictures of the maid, and Arnold, you could have done better. Maria must be one cold "Ice Princess" to make him go with this maid. At least Tiger Woods had the decency to pick relatively attractive women.

But, it is still sad for the kid, but at least he is being taken care of by his father. Just another future reality show star.

Not a fan of his, but I think this is a great gesture. At least those kids are not flashing the annoying "peace sign" that seems prevelant in every photo with Japanese young girls.

Izaki also stabbed the three policemen who rushed to the crime scene. The woman and one of the policemen remained in a critical condition on Wednesday.

Everytime I see J-Cops, they have on vests. Didn't they wear them this time? Also, why don't they use tazers? I know they seem somewhat reluctant to use deadly force with guns, but 3 cops with guns and one lone lunatic, he really shouldn't be able to walk away from this.

Perhaps salary cuts for government employees will come next.

I hope that this is just sarcasim. The reason why this would be a bad thing is that you will have people who will do nothing but cover themselves to make sure that no mistakes are made. When they do that, you will come right back around to the situation we have now, where no one will want to bring up bad news, in fear of them being held responsible and getting their pay cut.

The way I see it, you have many people in government/executive positions that will at all costs make sure that they "system" is working smoothly with no problems. Not brining up any bad news that can be seen as a problem.

What would be more effective, in my opinion, is holding accountability to the supervisors, and the superiors who did nothing to prevent problems. I can't blame a nuke plant worker/owner for an earthquake and tsunami. But I can blame them for what we are finding out after the fact about some of their shoddy procedures with taking care of waste issues, or some of the other items that are coming to light about the design and other infrastructure problems as well as not being upfront about the issues.

This is a useless gesture. What difference does it make if he gets paid or not? If he is incompetent, then instead of not getting paid, he should be fired, not allowed to work for "free" and still screw things up.

If he is proven to not be able to do the job effectively, then he shouldn't be there. Not getting a salary is not going to solve anything. So now is he saying, "since I am not getting paid, please work harder and don't take any personal time or forgo your own self and sacrifice for the 'company'" That type of mentality is part of what has gotten Japan in the situation it is in now.

My advice, if you want to cut salaries, start by getting rid of those whose job was to ensure that safety regulations were properly enforced and they weren't, and start holding the officials responsible and if they can't come up with a plan to work out start firing them and start looking for people who may actually know what they are doing. I am sure that there are some in the government/industry who do know what to do, but because they are not in the "right position" are overlooked.

How can a 16 year old girl give birth and her parents not know? Surely there must be some follow-up to this article. I would say at least the parents (of the girl) should have reported a missing infant, provided that they knew their daughter was pregnant.

“He is really beautiful when he disguises himself as a woman,” a policeman who was in charge of Konno’s case last year said.

That is probably the funnest comment I have heard from the J-police. I wonder was he a follower of this man online.

Washington's embargo and Tokyo's response were the trigger, but the arrogant aggression for economic purposes dating back to the British Empire that disregarded sovereign and human rights is the source.

You seem to be forgetting a few historical facts:

    • Nazi Germany overran Europe by the spring of 1940.

    • Japan signed the Axis Treay with Germany and Italy in 1940. With that signing, they were able to move into Indo-China (Vietnam) since France had fallen and they couldn't offer any resistance and the Germans obliged.

    • The so called "East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" that Japan was claiming only traded one colonial power to another. If Japan was so benevolent with colonial rule, ask the Koreans and Taiwanese how they were treated.

So if any human rights were being violated, it was by Japan.

The world celebrated after Hitler and Mussolini; let America celebrate.

We'll probably never know the exact time the trigger was pulled, but wouldn't it be poetic justice if he was killed on 30 April, the same date Hitler died.

Article says it happened on Sunday. I wonder if it happened the day before, 30 April, the day Hitler killed himself.

Whatever the case, good job on the USN Seals!

At 1AM local time in DC it was 14c so do you really think that most those girls in that picture would be wearing JUST t-shirts?!? Something's just not right with this picture...

I was watching this on CNN, people were coming dressed just like they are in the picture. Springtime in DC has some nice mild days, but judging from the looks of this crowd, these are probably Georgetown and other universities that are still out after going through finals.

Naive fools. They actually think something has changed.

The only thing that will change is a political commerical for the next election. I am sure that this scene will be one of many during the next campaign, along with the pictures showing high gas prices.

Secondly, no matter how much the current administration will try to milk this for electioneering purposes ("Look what we did!!"), it makes zero difference for the bigger picture.

True statement. Bush 41 won the Gulf War, and lost to Clinton. In 2 weeks this will be just a memory to the electorate. However, if we are paying $4-$5/gallon for gas, that will remain in people's mind longer. Especially if next winter, home heating fuel costs go up in New England (early primary states) and by summer 2012, gas is back high again.

But overall, I am glad the US was able to do so, and I am glad that Obama made the call when he had the information, not like Clinton did back in the 90's when he had a chance to get Osama but didn't go for it.

@pakowitz: some of the same things that were going on when I lived there. Yes Obama must have had it rough. But I wonder did he try to pass since he moved back there after living in Indonesia.

Correction to my previous post. The NYT poll was that 38% could definately say that he was born in the US, 62% had some doubts. They were not identifying themselves as a "birther" but that they just couldn't be 100% sure.

That is a huge problem for him and his re-election bid. He will already have some negative poll numbers due to the economic situation and the wars, this was just something that he could hopefully get ahead of to try to shore up his poll numbers.

And only Republicans could bring up this issue incessantly from before the election began until Obama whipped out the certificate, then claim Obama's been wasting the nation's time on the issue. Sweet lord, what morons! Sadly, their underlings will conveniently just forget they brought it up all the time.

@smithinjapan: A NYT poll released earlier this week found that 38% of Americans (both Rep & Dem) were not totally sure that Obama was born in the US. That is a pretty high number to have people not exactly sure about you when you are going into a re-election race with other low polling numbers and high gas prices.

Whoever wrote must be kidding. It is still present, as strong as ever. Having lived there I can tell you that compared to most of the mainland Hawaii, contrary to what people might think, is quite uptight about race.

@paskowitz: I lived there back in the 90's and am a frequent visitor. You are correct about your comments, Hawaii is still uptight about your racial identity. I know of a few cases where people decided to marry outside the "tribe" and got cut off. But what I meant by my comment was that now registrars probably would not just put a blanket term like "African" for a black person as their race.

Lostrune: Sure, whatever, but the box does say "status of father" or some such, it says "Race of father". I was just wondering if in 1961 "African" would be used. Any USer has an actual birth certificate from that era?

As I stated in my previous post, the particular registra probably used their own beliefs when putting down the race of his father. It is similar if they would have put "Asian" down for Tiger Woods. Yes he is Asian mixed, but his mother's country is Thailand, which is not a race. In this case, the common belief would have been since his father was not a US born black then he was an "African" (which in some cases could be white or black), and they didn't list Kenya.

I am looking at the thing on-line. Just out of curiousity: Could any USer born before 1961 check what it says under "race"? It strikes me as extremely odd that they write "African" under race of father. I seem to remember clearly that the whole political correct hyphenated-American thing only started a few years ago. In 1961, wouldn´t that box not have been marked with something like "colored" or "negro"? Just wondering.

@WilliB: It depends on what part of the country you were living in and who the registra was. I was born 4 years after Obama, and in the deep south. For my race, they put down "colored." My older brother has his race put down as "Negro."

I would have thought that they would have had his race listed since in Hawaii you had more race mixing than in most parts of the states at that time.

But keep one thing in mind about that time. Gen Powell told a story in his book that when he was a young 2nd Lt, he tried to eat at a resturant in GA, and the waitress asked if he was from the Carribian, then she would be able to serve him, but if he was just a regular US black, he couldn't be served. He claimed regular US black status and was not served.

Even in an area like Hawaii at that time, racial identity, in terms of what "group" you belonged to was present.
