I find it interesting that they are here in Japan protesting the government in Egypt, yet it was that same government that let them out so that they can leave Egypt and go to Japan. I wonder, will they really be ready to go back to Egypt if Mubarak is ousted and a more religious vice seculart government is put into power.

I wonder how many Egyptian women will be willing to go back under those conditions that are living here in Japan?

Overall I think he did a good job of reading the situation as it was unfolding and reacting accordingly. It's not always bad to have power and influence in a country like Egypt in this situation.

@SuperLib: YOu brought up good points, but what I was speaking about was a time when the US either stood by you in public, and may have made suggestions to a country in private as to what needs to be changed. Yes Obama made diplomatic overtures, but for all of his efforts, they could be viewed as trying to play on both sides of the field. What would have happened if Obama would have said, yes Egypt has a way to go in terms of political freedoms, but we have been allied with Mubarak for 30 years and we will stick with him.

I am sure Egypt has had to do a lot of "dirty work" for the US in the area, and for the US to just "dump" them now (i.e. Mubarak) does not sit well with our allies.

    Just my opinion.

When were those 'old days'?? Fence sitting has occured in democratic government since time immemorial.

@jason6: True it has, but in the past, some governments have stuck with their "persons in power" even through the bad.

So when the US government are calling for Mubarak to respect the people and leave at official press conferences, is that their way of not being too obvious about their love for him?

That's just US "doublespeak" trying to place bets on both sides of the table. So if Mubarak stays in, it can look like the US backed him. If he gets put out, then they can claim they were on the side of the protestors.

Instead of the old days, when a government made a decision, and stuck with it weather good or bad.

For those who think that the Muslim Brotherhood will usher in an era of free elections and peace in the region, this was reported from an article from NHK:

Egypt's banned Muslim Brotherhood movement has unveiled its plans to scrap a peace treaty with Israel if it comes to power, a deputy leader said in an interview with NHK TV.

Rashad al-Bayoumi said the peace treaty with Israel will be abolished after a provisional government is formed by the movement and other Egypt's opposition parties.

"After President Mubarak steps down and a provisional government is formed, there is a need to dissolve the peace treaty with Israel," al-Bayoumi said.

I guess all the "Hope & Change" that they had started to report that was going to happen in Egypt will probably not happen.

So if they do form a coalition govt. with the Muslim Brotherhood, I hope that they don't have the majority for the sake of not having a war develop in the area.

The dealers could be registered and under contract, plus obvious stipulations to disarm and allow for inspections. But at the end of the day you're dealing with people who would torch a competitors' warehouse and kill their staff at will, so I can't really see how that mindset would suddenly change.

@SuperLib: America does that now, it's called Diplomacy with a lot of two-bit dictators in the world.

Everyone seems to think it is the "hood rats" in the inner cities that are fueling the drug business in America. Charlie Sheen's latest escapades show that it affects all levels of society.

because every time you pay $$$$ for drugs from Mexico or that had to go through Mexico to get to your town or city in Somewheresville, USA well, this kind of thing had to happen in Mexico etc..to get you all your nice natural drugs from south of the border.

It is for this reason, that durgs SHOULD NOT BECOME LEGAL. Do you honestly think that businesses that would conduct such brazen actions on public streets, would actually adhere to the laws concerning taxation if their product were to become legal? These guys are killing off the competition for things as little as routes to use to get the drugs to the US. I doubt very seriously that they will be willing to pay 35% to the government, and also pay the health care and social security taxes on their many employees in "somewheresville" throughout the US and other countries.

The article above says that tourism accounts for about 11% of the total economy.

@yabits: If only 11% of the econmy depends on tourism, what does the rest of the economy do? Also, what exports does Egypt provide to the rest of the world? Right now I only see the price of oil going up, not because Egypt has oil but because OPEC sees an opportunity to raise the price.

So all of the so called activist, what are their jobs, and what do they do?

A Star of David was featured prominently in a 'Down with Mubarak' placard. I doubt that makes Egypt's neighbor feel at ease with the protests. Is this just the opinion with one protester? Maybe. Then again, maybe not.

@atamant: As well as many placards against Mubarak that I have seen that were written in English, when I thought Arabic was the native language.

I saw "The King's Speech" and found it a much better movie than "The Social Networ." Yes it is somewhat inaccurate, but as a poster pointed out, the main emphasis was the king and his impediment. It may have glossed over some of the aspects, but it did get the point that when he needed to speak at the beginning of WW2 he was able to do it.

    I hope it wins.

That may well be the case. However, I would suggest that you consider that the news source is ISRAELI. (thanks atamant)

That matters the most. Egypt under Sadat signed a Peace Treaty with Israel, and Mubarak kept the peace between the two. If Mubarak goes, and the opposition comes to power, what do you think Israel is going to do?

It may not matter much to those of us who live far away, but this is in Israel's back yard. Furthermore, what difference does it make? One could say that the reports that the aims of the protestors that appear in Arab papers are peacful could be biased also.

it if anyone gets killed, regardless of whether they know them or not. Imagine that?! Guess they just got to toughen up and get real, right?

@lesgrande: As a person who has had to prepare to battle, I am not particularly fond of having anyone fight or be near fighting, but that is just part of human nature.

Taking a quick read from papers around the immediate area, I found this gem in the Jerusalem Post:

A leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt told the Arabic-language Iranian news network Al-Alam on Monday that he would like to see the Egyptian people prepare for war against Israel, according to the Hebrew-language business newspaper Calcalist.

I guess that he didn't get the memo that this is just about removing a dictator in Egypt and getting more food to the people, and finding work for the unemployed.

If the whole goal of the Obamacare was to model it on systems like in UK, why then has the British PM said that an overhaul is needed for their healthcare system. If Canada is so great, why did the governor of Newfoundland go to America to have his surgery. Even the likes of Madonna, who likes to bash her own country (USA) came back to America from Britian to have her baby.

There are problems that do need to be taken care of, but I just don't think that this method is the best one.

No one is claiming the loss of tourist income would be a good thing.

@yabits: If the Muslim Brotherhood does gain power in a coalition government, do you think that people will be more willing to go to Egypt and tour as they had before? I wouldn't want to go with them in charge, not knowing that at what point will they decide to institue reforms and people wind up getting stuck there.

Also, how many tourist companies would take the time to invest in tourism companies, not knowing if one day they will be labled as "infidels" and forced out.

Also, do you think food prices will go down after this rioting? I doubt it.

I am not against healthcare reform, and I agree that things need to change. But I am just not in favor of this plan. Why is it in the Obamacare bill that it calls for the hiring of 14,000 IRS agents to assist in the oversight of the tax collection.

GJDailleult, has good points. I am capitalist, and I get the point of being able to make money. But there are somethings, where one would hope the main drive to provide the service would not be a profit motive. I am not asking for socalized medicne, but we need to get better at reforming the insurance industry, cutting out the excessive costs, and make it so that people can afford healthcare.

And the high percentage of Americans without access to quality healthcare will continue to be second class citizens. A victory for head-in-the-sand retrograde thinking.

@Smorkian: Long story short, I have relatives who have been on the public dole, not because they can't find work, but because they chose to do so (that is a discussion for another time). I work and pay taxes, and they don't, I pay for my health care, and they don't. Their children have had braces, other medical procedures and full coverage since they were born, all paid for by the taxpayer.

The problem with US health care is that the insurance companies get too much control and the trial lawyers get to file huge lawsuits for malpractice. Those things along with cases like I mentioned and the burden of taking care of people who are in the country illegally are what drives up the cost.

Should there be reform, yes. But don't believe all the hype that people are not being treated. They are.

Obama originally advocated for a public option but that was turned down by the Senate.

A public option would still mandate that everyone has insurance.

The two judges who voted called it "unconstitutional" are Republican appointed judges (so it is not surprise why they have this conservative view since no Republican voted for the healthcare reform).

@FruitsBasketFan: Yes the judges may have been Rep. but they used the president's own words as a candidate in their ruling. The ruling stated:

“I note that in 2008, then-Senator Obama supported a health care reform proposal that did not include an individual mandate because he was at that time strongly opposed to the idea, stating that ‘if a mandate was the solution, we can try that to solve homelessness by mandating everybody to buy a house,’” Judge Vinson wrote in a footnote toward the end of the 78-page ruling Monday.

I guess he was just holding an elected offical to his word.

Wow. The article above says that tourism accounts for about 11% of the total economy. And you claim that it accounts for the "majority."

@yabits: that 11% of the economy employs about 12% of the workforce. So a country that has massive unemployment, to loose another 12% is not going to be a good thing.

    @lesgrande:

when 1.3 billion dollars is "donated" as military aid? I suppose you are going to play naive and claim it is truly given away freely with no strings attached. And you did chicken out and not tell us what job it is exactly you do that gives you actual experience of the situation.

I am not stupid to believe that the money the US gives goes into the wrong hands, but you answered my question. The US gave the money, and the military probably took a large portion, but where did the rest go? It is the responsibility of the Egyptian Govt. to take care of its people. Not the job of the US Govt to say, "X" amount needs to go to social programs, health care, etc.

As far as my empolyment, not really pertinent to the discussion, but to sume it up, I have had dealings with the military establishment.

I spoke of corporate criminals in reference to Alphaape's mindset.

@lesgrande: Not that corporate greed is really the issue here, considering that Egypt has no oil, and if people are really that poor, where is there money to be made? Tourism accounts for the majority of mony that is generated by the government.

And for you to begin to try to label someone as a certain types, shows me that you are just mouthing what you hear instead of thinking for yourself. Go back and look at my posts. See that I didn't say that the US has a vested coporate interest in Egypt, unless the Disney company bought the pyramids.

Egypt was a clear ally, next to Israel. One of the larger Middle East Armies who can fight. Why wouldn't the US want to keep them secure.

Also, with the billions of money that the US has poured into Egypt, I guess my business classes I took so long ago I must have forgotten. Please tell me, how the US giving tax dollars to a poor country fo r30 years, is lining the big corporate business.
