If you look at the US and how our "swiss cheese" borders have allowed millions to come into our country and decreas wages and put a tax on our schools and medical services. They also depress wages when they are illegal and have no proper documentation, and thus employers can pay them below scale wages, and not have to report the income to the Social Security system to pay taxes. Not to mention, the influx of criminals and others with no skills who see America as a place of opportunity. Why steal in your country if everyone there has nothing to steal.
Having said all that, Japan can copy the American method but make a few changes. Open the borders, but have inplace a firm system of controls. If you let more foreigners in, then ensure that they have skills and a valid employment job that will pay them a wage to sustain themselves over here. If they do and loose the job, time should be given to allow them to find another, but if in time they don't then they have to leave.
Ensuring that the immigrants that come in are not criminals through background checks will also help.
What I see the problem that will arise is the xenophobia that will occur. There will be Japanese who will not accept the foreigners who work here, and inevitably they will face discrimination from the Japanese society at large from those who don't want to accept them, or believe that all us foreigners are criminals.

gonemad, do you recommmend the same proposals for foreigners living here in Japan? What about some military types that have been here for 10 years lving in houses off the base. Shouldn't they be allowed to vote in local elections.
There is a reason why we have things called countries. They form a set geographic boundary, that lets like people live together and govern themselves. It is not "one world" and we all interfere in others business. If so, then the largest voting bloc would be China with 1 billion people.

How about non-Americans take an active interest in voting in their own countries. People are ready to rip on "W" and the rest of the elected officals, but let's take a world tour shall we: Russia, fair elections to allow Putin to shift power from the President to the Prime Minister, and now he is the Prime Minister (or is it vice versa, no clear cut policy, change the rules as you go, just like the US Democrats) Philippines: Continue to elect from the elitist majority, while they enshrine their families and friends with billions while the rest of the country suffers. Biggest source of income for the PI, remittance of money from around the world from the ex-pats that dot the world working as maids, bar hostess, entertainers and marrying foreigners. China: Too easy a target. North Korea: Too easy a target. Zimbabwae: Too easy a target. Mexico: Send your poor and uneducated to the US to work lowering wages in the US. But they will send money back to "Ole Mexico" to make the owner of the telecommuncations industry there (he is richer than Bill Gates) even more richer. By the way, don't maximize the potential oil and other natural resources you have (silver, minerals, tourist beaches) but just sell out to the local drug cartel to push drugs to America..
I could go on and on. Does the US have problems with who we elect, yes we do. But I will say that for the most part, they are not screwing the masses as much as some of the "elected" leaders in the countries I have named or not named.

I guess this has two meanings: 1) Barry was facing heat from the Clintons on racial politics. What better way to show that he has transcended above the fray by distancing himself from a radical like Wright. Now the majority white population will see he is not like the Jackson crowd, and they probably should vote for him. 2) More than likely, Wright is of the "old order" and get's his recognition and fame from "blame the white man" crowd. This would help the Clinton's in the fact that that "old order" is solidly in the tank for them, and they have managed to make a lot of money playing along the game with them. Here comes Obama, an upstart that hasn't "paid his dues" in their opinion and would cause people like Wright to loose the mass appeal. They have all ready said that the lady that was mainly responsible for his being at the National Review event on Monday is an admitted Hillary supporter and active campaigner for her.
So either way, McCain will come out the winner.

Even small town cops in the US don't take any s***t from young hoodlums. Evenn the most hard core gang bangers know not to mess with cops in places like LA or NYC or other big cities or they will feel the rath of the police.
If I am not mistaken, aren't the cops armed? Or at least break out the night sticks and have the youngsters move along. This thread kind of goes along with the other a day or two ago about rather to spank or not. If kids don't know what discipline is, then they are more apt to commit this type of behavior. Not saying that you should beat children for any minor infraction, but they must be taught to respect authority.
I am not advocating wide scale police brutality, but if the guys that we have entrusted our security to can't handle a bunch of rowdy teens, then what do we expect these teens to do when they grow up and decide to commit more crimes, since they think that they will be able to bully the cops.
Stand up for yourselfs J-cops. Instead of protecting Olympic Flames and looking at the gaijin military stationed over here, "police" your own back yards and show these punks how to respect authority,

A life: It would keep her out of the general population, and hopefully prevent her from giving birth to another child and possibly doing it again. I would actually prefer to see her executed. But I know how the comments would be on that.
If she is locked up, she can then reflect on her actions. I am sure that there is the post partem depression that can occur. But, I think that the actions of the lady show that she had some mental issues. If the child was born premature, I wonder what sort of prenatal care she was receiving. Where was the father of the child and did he have anything to do with this. It would be good if the J-press really delved into this one, and maybe we can get a picture of this woman, and maybe try to find a way to help reduce these actions.
But if they just stop at the sensationalist effect, and then go on I believe these type of sad events will continue to go on.

Spare the rod spoil the child. I was spanked (because looking back I deserved it) but not beaten. My parents were fair. If the situation called for a stern lecture, then it was given. If it called for "go get me a switch" then it happened. It was never done out of anger or heated passion for brutality.
I think kids who merit a spanking should get one. Nothing too harsh or with the clothes off, but discipline should be enforced by both ways (lecture and spanking). As children get older, if they have been taught properly they will learn about respect and to know that striking all of the time is not warranted. I think today too many parents try to be their kids friends, and not a parent of bad guy.
Don't get me wrong, I am best of pals with my parents now, but when I was growing up, they were mom and dad. As I got older, and began to be able to reason better, then it was time for them to be friends (and still parents too).
A good tap never hurt, and I would have no problem signing a waiver for my child's school to do it withing reason.

The Democrats are making it easy for McCain to win. After this primary, the rhetoric between the two will really heat up. Now the Super Delegates come into play. The main problem I see is that both of them (Obama & Hillary) along with the Dem. party like to change the rules in the middle of the game. The complained how Bush stole the election in 2000, and how their candiates were getting beat, so they go and change the rules to add the "super delegates" just in case their political games don't go the way they want them (so clear in this case). But at the same time, people in Michigan and Florida will not have their votes counted.
The way the selection of delegates for the Dems in each primary depends on so many differnt little rules, that makes it all confusing. The end result: confusion on who wins, and now we have candidates calling a loss not a loss but a "win by a differnt measure." Whereas the Republicans just go with something simple: who got the most votes.
This changing of the rules, and coming up with bizarre methods will only hurt the Dems, and voters will get turned off and vote Rep. Then instead of blaming themselves, they will blame it on "voter fraud" or dirty tricks by the Reps.

I read the whole story, I hope this lady does not have any kids. What is worse, some poor sap is going to marry her and consign himself to a world of misery. If she is only looking for someone that can take care of her, even though she knows someone she likes but he does not make enough, I can imagine the man that does land her. No wonder he will be a slave to the office and the late night stop for drinks at the local hostess bar.
In my opinion, she is just setting herself up to be one of those miserable old ladies, or pretty soon one who spends all her money on a dog.

I say good on them. Like it or not, you must learn about the good things about your history as well as the bad things. By pretending that they did not happen will not make it go away, only just gives the opportunities for the mistakes of the past to be brought up again. We still have people in the US that regularly celebrate Confederate War dead Rebel soldiers. Even in some states, the birthday of Robert E. Lee is a state holiday (state workers in some states are given the chance to take that day off or Martin Luther King Day off).
So the fact that the lawmakers went there, at least they are honoring those who were before. I am not saying that what they believed they went to war for was right, but that they made the sacrifice. Yes some did do some bad things, but they were just products of their time.

I wonder will this robot make kindly suggestions to the kids as to what they should ask their parents to buy. I imagine that there is a gift shop near the nursery, that has miniature robots for sale. I see it just as another ploy to get parents to buy something that their kids have been playing with all day.
I am not against the forward progress of technology, but like many of the posters pointed out, if all this robot can do is just strike up a few words, you are better off with kids in a video monitored room. At least that way some human can be prepared to step in in the event of an emergency. If we get better at automation in the future (like in that Robin Williams movie that I can't think of the name) I don't think it is a good idea to leave irresponsible humans with an inanimate object.

I think that his comments are telling in one important way. He took 55 years to resolve his emotional issues with the enemy he faced on Iwo Jima. Even if he came from the racist part of America, you could still say that he was somewhat "enlightened" as compared to someone who has been brought up in the Middle East. Now look at the situation in Iraq. You have people (Shia/Sunni) that are still carrying a grudge that has been handed down for centuries. Same with Hamas and Israel. I am not saying who is right or wrong on all the Middle East issues, but if the people there can't come to a realization like this gentleman has (even thought it took him 55 years), I forsee the issues in that part of the world will be around for a long time.

Not trying to say blacks were the better GIs, but just trying to point out that the racist comments by the gentleman go both ways. There were images of what they thought about the Japanese as well as their own soldiers. Times were different then, and I hope that we are better now.
Moderator: Back on topic please. References to black GIs are not relevant.

A good book also on this subject is called "America's Geisha Ally..Reimagining the Japanese enemy by Naoko Shibusawa, it covers many of the sentiments made by the gentleman. To sum it up, the American press made sure those sterotype images of Japanese were ingrained in the American fighting man and to motivate the war effort. However, after the war, America saw that it needed Japan as a hedge against the USSR, and now those same images were softened to show how under our tutelage and guidance, Japan was a "good friend" now. Basically, we replaced the Japanese as the "good asian" from the Chinese who were now "bad asians" since they went communist.
So, this gentleman who had been to war, was a product of what he was seeing and reading. True, he should have had an epiphany much sooner rather than 55 years later, but that just goes to show how racial attitudes are in America, and the world over. Replace his comments with a Chinese vet from the era and see if he still has any hard feelings toward Japan.

I checked with the owner of the club GeoDana in Yokosuka. He told me that he was there the night of the murder. And he was a regular there. So the fact that he went to a club is probably not far fetched. I thought that if you exited the Shiori station and took a left turn, there was a pachinko parlor across the street. I could be wrong. But in all likely hood I hope that he is found guilty. As for the "Blackanese" girls that he was with, tyedyed is true in his comments. Not only the girls but sad to admit some of the guys that come here from America are really hyped on that "thug" image and try to live it to the max. I have seen a few guys over here that were in the military or relatives of them and they are out in the streets dressed like "clowns" in all of the hip hop regalia and trying to live the life like they see on a video. Not only do they have a huge following among Japanese women, but I have seen many a young Japanese male with dreadlocks, and wearing North Carolina Blue (I doubt if they even know where that state is) and acting as if they jsut fell out of the latest BET video.

He probably went to "GeoDana" (which is owned by a hard working Nigerian) or to club US to meet his girls. As "Dan" said, these were your typical "Honch Runners" who are broke and looking for what they see in the latest rap videos of what blacks are like. The fact that he made them pay and they still went with him tells you of the mentality of the two girls he was with.
The description of the way they were dressed, probably is no different from the many "kogals" I see around Yokosuka-chuo in the "Japanese Only" section of clubs that us gajin are not allowed in.
What ever the stories, I hope that they do a methodical and through investigation enough so that this clown can be found guilty and given the ultimate.
As far as American Bashing on this subject, yes he is a green card holder from Nigeria that has enlisted in the USN, but I wonder what steps the Nigerian gov't has had in this case? Will they come to the aide of their countryman to ensure his rights are guarnteed? I doubt it seriously. So when everyone begans to rant on how "uncouth" the US is with our "right to bear arms" (which is not even relevant in this case), please remember, that there are no recruiting stations in Lagos, Nigeria, or in the Philippines. These foregin nationals come to the US and view the US military as a way to get a faster and better chance for citizenship. So if we are that screwed up, why is it that someone would leave their own country to try to become part of a land of "wild west holigans?" Could it be that just maybe, even with all of the US's problems, that they see that they have a better chance of getting a chance for a better way of life than their own country?
