Why would one have to pay for a "cram school" if the children spend all day in regular school? I think if the GOJ took another look at it's educational system, and developed a better method of preparing students not only for a test to go to the "better high school" and college but to be able to learn and compete then maybe some of those child rearing costs would drop. I grew up in a deep south school district, and we did not go on ski trips or out of the country for trips (some students did, but these were privately financed and at times they did fund raisers to help defray some of the expenses), but I think I was able to receive a well rounded education to enable me to pass the ACT/SAT and get a college education (a nice major university) without having my parents pay some tutor to teach me what I missed in school.

Revise the education system, and a lot of things will start falling into place in regards to decreasing the cost of raising kids.

Henry Hilton is probably from the "maimstream media" in the US. He decries the US military and what we do, but if he was to go to the Middle East or Russia and make his views known, they would probably chop his head off and throw it down a well. He is entitled to his opinion, but his statements are pretty off. Does he know what measures we have to go through? Is he willing to sacrifice his free time and be in by 2200 and not drink alcohol after certain time periods when a bad journalist writes something that causes everyone to think that all journalists are bad and he has to show them that he is an "ambassador to freedom of the press?"

Mr. Hilton, I suggest you come to Yokosuka, and live the life of a young sailor. See how you like the restrictions put on you because of what someone did, and then write your story. I am sure that you will probably have a different opinion.

This quote provides a very good summary of what is going on in East Asia. A Japanese environment minister goes to China and talks about how sand from China is polluting probably not only Japan but Korea and China itself. Not saying that the Chinese are doing this intentionally, but maybe due to failed agricultural policies, or deforestation or some other causes and the concerns for the environmet and he is booed by college students, normally the ones you would think who would have an open mind.

And the Japanese think that if they diminish the US military in Japan, and started to build up their own defenses that China will just stand idilly by and do nothing. This act, just shows how much China still is not a "friend" to Japan. Not saying that the US military is the be all answer to solve any problems, but if a bunch of college students can get bent over something like this, when they are probably wearing masks themselves to breath easier from the dust and pollution should tell you something about the state of affairs between Nippon and China.

sailwind, thanks for the great post. For the others who are bashing the NRA, if you would do a little research, they advoacte that you have the right to have a fire arm, but not the right to settle differences the old west style (or for those from Yamato, to settle it samurai style with swords).
Charlton Heston was a decent man, and when you look at sailwinds post, you can see that just becuase he was a conservative, he was not some "bible thumping maniac" out to convert everyone to his religion or thoughts.

    RIP Mr. Heston.

There was an artilce in this past Sunday's Honolulu Newspaper on "Barry" (as he was called when he lived over there growing up) and how his grandmother was described as a tough boss (she was one of the first female Branch managers and senior loan officers for Bank of Hawaii), but she was fair towards all races. She was a pretty well respected lady and the people interviewed did not find her to habor many of the racail sentiments that were present on the island then. So a guy who can throw his own grandmother under the bus for a vote is not a guy I would want to be my president.

With all of the conflicts about the Super Delegates and the non-seating of delegates in the FLA and MICH primaries, one tends to forget the problems with FLA in the 2000 election.

The problems the Dems have, and I believe that will help McCain win the election is now people are seeing how people like Hillary have tried to maniuplate the machine to go in their favor. At the beginning when she was a shoo in, she did not care about wheter those two states would count, since she was expecting that by now she would have the nomination. Now that things are different they want the rules to be changed. All parties (Hil and Obama) agreed on the penalties for FLA and MICH if they moved their primary up. With the Super delegates, it was their way to make sure that even if the popular vote did not go their way, there was a way to circumvent the poplular vote in her favor by giving her the nomination, thus basically ignoring the poplular count.

The same people who were blaming Bush and the Republicans for stealing the election in 2000 have basically had their own plans to rig this one back fire on themselves. If you notice, unlike the last election in 2004 where there was still much discussion of the Republicans and their vote tampering in Fla and afterwards with Ohio, but I don't think you will see too much of that this time. The Dems created this mess on their own.

greenteaonsens: Good observations and spot on. I know this doesn't matter, but what type of area is Koganei City, Tokyo? The reason why I ask is if you are correct in your statements, was she in a normal area where there are other families that are rasing children where she could have at least had other companions to seek help, or is it an area full of people like her, single and living all to themselves?

God Bless the soul of that poor child.

The article makes a few "Great Leaps" (no pun intended), but it is thought provoking. It is one persons opinion, that is it. Good on JT to at least , post it to get it out there in the open. Many have made comments as to the claims of the author, and I thought that was what a free society and freedom of the press was about. A person could put out there opinion, and then, in civilized and a rational forum, have his arguments discussed among people.

I do have some reservations about China's heavy handedness in world affairs and they, along with the rest of the nations in the world have acted in ways that have benefitted them at the cost of others.

But it is a good article in regards to getting his thoughts out there and causing a discussion. If you don't agreee, then so be it. But at least you get a chance to see someone else's thoughts and line of thinking.
