I don't have much respect for Japanese women either as they are the ones looking for men who fit the right "box". I believe that's why foreign men are so popular in Japan, because they live outside the "box". This article talks about "aggressive" Japanese men also but I have yet to see one.

Why can't people just be themselves? Having to choose from such a limited set of lifestyles is restricting.

Very true! I believe the struggles we face as Westerners in Japan need to be recognized much more by the international community as a whole and the focus can shift to what needs to be done to improve the situation.

I think the Japanese will always consider us as foreigners no matter how long we live here or what we do to fit in. A woman I work with tried her best when she came over here, studied the language, did flower arranging classes and so on. Unfortunately she found out nothing really changes when a small child on the street saw her and said "hello". It was eye-opening for her at least.

The police seem strangely uninformed about this. Why would they let the Australian consulate take over the investigation?

Yes tmarie, dealing with Japanese in the workplace can be a chore due to these communication issues. Keep your chin up and berate people when you have to. Believe me, it's the only way!

The worst part of it that this problem is not recognized in Japan. Admitting the issue exists is the first step but I'm not holding my breath.

Never leave little kids to play in the snow, just basic common sense that seems to be lacking here. Imagine how the parents feel, where were they though, I wonder?

It is true that it's pretty galling that they tell us not to eat on the trains when they have all those food shows on TV and talk about food constantly. They even have McDonalds posters everywhere but apparently it's not good enough to be eaten on the train.

There is a serious problem with infanticide in Japan. When are the Japanese going to stop being in denial about this? Why people aren't talking about this is a mystery, life just seems to go on, talk about heads in the sand!

It comes down to lack of common sense. This kind of accidents would never happen if there were road rules and people followed them. Surely this incident will spur the government into action?

just happens too often in Japan and no-one is trying to stop it. What if everyone did this when their child died? Unbelievable and unheard of anywhere else.

Right on! We get treated so badly here by the populace and now they want to tell us where and when to eat! These rules seem squarely aimed at US style fast food too. Well, there's a line and this is it!
