It is great to see that Japanese tradition is still alive. I love Japanese kimono for their beauty, simplicity and elegance.

Most Japanese surfers are already at the beach by 3:30am in summer or as soon as the sun is up. They surf till 8 and then go to work. Nobody is spoilt. Surfing is such a healthy sport, all your body parts get good exercise without any risk unlike for example tennis or golf where you get shoulder problems afterwards.Surfers have a bigger sense of responsibility than other people, surfers eat a healthy diet otherwise you can't do it. We are not living in the 60's anymore.

Exactly, Foxie san!!! I have some Japanese friends who are surfers and most of them are sararimen with decent jobs. I can't believe that there are people out there who consider surfers as spoiled rich kids.

Antonios, but not in October I once was there in a terrible storm. The same happened again about 2 weeks ago.

Oh, thats unfortunate. I know it occurs occasionally since i was studying in the Aegean University of Rhodes and there was once a storm strong enough to be compared to typhoon. Nice avatar, btw!

Hope everyone will agree to it. Thumbs down?

Thumb up from me! Of course there's going to be greedy people though, as long as humanity exists. It is definitely part of the human nature and it is not going to change anytime soon. The problem is how to make the regulation efficient enough in order to deal with these greedy people and prevent any huge inequalities.

It is a gloomy day in Rhodes. It's raining and all the streets are deserted.

Foxie, i agree 100% with your example, though it is rather difficult to come across a gloomy day in Rhodes. :-)

Government "workers" got retirement at 52 until recently didn't they Antonios?

No way. Only SOME women with young children (of less than 18 years old) USED to retire at the age of 52. Most of the Public employees retired at the age of 60-65 depending on how many years they worked, what exactly was their job etc. Now, the age of retirement is settled at 65.

Impossible. You can not turn Greece into Germany overnight, and certainly not with austeriy programs. The whole concept is ludicrious.

Keep in mind that Greece's goal is NOT to turn into Germany overnight. Rather than than, the goal is to reduce the HUGE public sector and deal with issues suck as the lack of productivity, making the economy more competitive, etc. There is no way for Greece to turn into Germany, as there is no way for ANY country to turn into Germany over night. BUT, huge reforms need to be implemented and archaic laws need to be abolished. (For example, there is a stupid law in Greece since 1985 that forbids the construction of ANY building taller than 27 meters. Obviously, you cannot have a fully competitive economy with stupid laws such as this one).

They are Greeks and acted like, well, Greeks.

As a Greek person i should find this insulting, but i don't because i know it is Greece's fault for promoting this "Zorba image" of the fat and lazy guy who loves dancing and drinking but not working.

Let me just remind you that the "lazy" Greece had more GDP per capita in 2010 than the "workaholic" S. Korea. And why don't you take a look at Greece's economic growth during the late 60's - early 70s? It was second in the world behind Japan. Btw, i really can not understand these comments about the"Greeks who retire at 50". It is the worst kind of propaganda i have ever heard. Only the sailors and army officers retire at the age of 55. It is totally inaccurate.

You are right though that there are fundamental differences between northern economies and Greek economy. During the period of Socialism, Greece focused on tourism and services, abandoning at the same time its previous model of industry and agriculture. The whole structure of the Greek economy needs to change in order to be more competitive and be able to face the challenges of the 21st century. Because of that, crucial reforms need to be implemented immediately. And yes, it is a good thing that the austerity bill passed despite all these unnecessary protests.

It's funny that most readers here focus on their age difference, as it is the sole reason behind the crime. Guys, this has nothing to do with it. It could have very easily been a 20 years old vs a 18 years old crime or a 50 years old vs a 48 years old crime. Lunatics are lunatics. You never stab anyone just because she broke up with you or makes your life miserable. There are several other rational choices but killing anybody is definitely the WORST.

but some countries like Greece?? Do they really belong in the EU??

Yes, they do. EU and the Eurozone are two totally different things. UK, which you refer to with the example of the London bridge is NOT part of the Eurozone.

Gosh, that was terrible. I just can't believe that people passed by without doing anything... I don't consider them as human beings. Humans do not let a two year old girl lying on the street like that.

In the interview of the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan magazine, Mr. Woodford said:

In Japan, I would have upset too many people and have been put in a chair by the window. Japan needs to get to the point quickly where it can release the talent of younger people. I don't have a romantic idea about gaijin bosses. If it was the other way around, I would be the one at the coffee machine saying, "Look at the Japanese individual running this prestigious British company. He doesn't even speak English, so what can he teach us?"

It seems like a self fulfilling prophecy to me....

Such a move will be discussed after the so-called troika of Greece's international creditors - European Central Bank, European Commission and IMF - submits its next progress report later this month, Schaeuble was quoted as saying.

I guess that this report is going to be negative since the progress is not the one expected. Either way, it was rather impossible for Greece to fully achieve these macroeconomic reforms in a period of 1-2 years. The problem with Greece is its huge Public Sector and the fact that at least 200,000 public employees need to be fired immediately. It gets even more complicated though, since the permanence of a public employee is protected by the Constitution. Nevertheless, it's not easy to fire 200,000 employees in the first place for a number of reasons. Of course some of the reforms were in fact implemented and there was significant progress. Unfortunately, reducing the Public Sector was proved to be "Achilles' heel" of the whole restructuring plan.

I think Greece will not avoid a haircut in its debt and both Merkel and Sarkozy are searching for ways to protect the stability of the banking system in Europe following such a haircut.

I am sorry, but the argument about the Japanese/ Korean vs U.S. soldiers' rape is absurd. There are 127 million Japanese in Japan and 50 million Koreans in S. Korea while the total number of U.S. servicemen in both countries is approximately 80,000 soldiers. It makes sense that there would be more rapes by locals than by U.S. servicemen.

It also makes sense that such a tragic event will get more popularity in media as well as protests in the streets since many people are by default against the presence of U.S bases in their countries. Moreover, the servicemen are considered to be honorable guests for the protection of the host countries and therefore, such a crime will get more attention than the average local vs local crime.

I hope they get punished properly. A rapist is a rapist, no matter his age, race, nationality, religion, etc.
