Its summer in NZ now, no flu untill this lot arrived en masse to spread it. Common sense says dont fly with a cold let alone the flu. Even a doctor will tell you not to fly when you have a cold. I guarantee all if not most knew they had symptoms before boarding this flight.
You make a habit of defending the ignorant do you apsara?
No, I make a habit of not jumping to conclusions- how do you know any of these people were suffering flu symptoms when they got on the plane? As I said, a feature of influenza is that it comes on very suddenly, and also that it makes most people so sick that if they were already suffering from symptoms they probably wouldn't make it onto the plane.
I also make a habit of not making ridiculous generalisations- I have been coughed and sneezed on by all kinds of nationalities, whatever you want to think about it being the exclusive domain of Japanese people.

ExportExpert, flu symptoms usually come on suddenly, so the majority of the sufferers probably didn't know they had it when they boarded the 11 hour flight to NZ. Anyway, typical of who/what? The flu spreads seasonally all over the world, not only in Japan because of something you believe only people here do/don't do.

Very sad- I have been to Homs and met some wonderful people there. Actually ordinary Syrians are hands-down the friendliest, most hospitable people I have ever met and they deserve a much better government than they have.

Why do you assume it's not available here? It is, it's just that not everyone gets the vaccine.

I was interested when I was looking for information on norovirus to see the O blood type effect- me and the family members, including Japanese people, who came down with it all have type O blood. Some people who I might have expected to catch it since they were around us the whole time we were sick were totally unscathed- I'm waiting until they are back from their holidays to ask what their blood type is.

The Munya Times, Princess Masako's illness was most likely caused by a virus, not food poisoning, so what she and her family ate has nothing to do with it since norovirus etc are usually transmitted person-to-person.
Interesting to see so many here had norovirus or something like it over New Year- we did too, and managed to take it overseas with us and give it to my family there as well (we came down with it the day after arriving in my home country so pretty sure we caught it in Japan). It was nasty but we were all over it in 24 hours and didn't need any medication. If Masako had a fever on Tuesday she is probably well over it by now.

Perhaps it does, but not in the way you are suggesting. Maybe they are putting funds and effort towards assisting people and not transplanting trees?

What a mind-bogglingly uninformed comment on so many levels.
a) There are many other reasons why it may be necessary to use exclusively or supplement with formula. b) Japan has one of the highest breastfeeding rates in the developed world- more than 90% of women are breastfeeding their babies when they get home from the hospital/clinic- this is more than double the rate in some parts of the US. c) Japan does not "flog formula" as superior to breastfeeding- see b). d) This formula is for babies 9 months and older, not newborns. While a significant number of women in Japan breastfeed past one year, no baby is exclusively breastfed at 9 months, they have started eating solid food, and 9 months is a perfectly respectable length of time to breastfeed as not everyone wants to continue past then for various reasons. e) as for the "silver lining", I'm sure this has made most breastfeeding mothers in Japan wonder just what the radiation level of their own breastmilk might be.

desune is talking about the children represented by the jizo in this picture, not your clinic experience. Not all dead children are aborted fetuses- as I said above, children lost to miscarriages, stillbirths, SIDs are all represented by jizo as well, I'm sure you know that but are choosing to ignore it for some reason.

Just because you worked at an abortion clinic does not mean you know how those particular children died.
I agree with desune, and I still say that it is exaggerating wildly to say that abortion is the #1 form of contraception here- the fact that you worked in an abortion clinic is 100% irrelevant. While they may be common, there is no way that there are more abortions than condoms used, which is what you claim, and if you are still sure of that, concrete stats please. With all due respect, you also need to think about what you post- looks like I'm not the only one who thinks so, given the number of down votes you received on that comment.

That would suggest that statistically abortions happen more often than condoms are used, which I seriously doubt. Honestly, the drama in some of the comments on this site!

Jizo represent stillborn and naturally miscarried babies as well, not only aborted babies.
That woman looks to be at least 80. I seriously doubt abortions were widely available in Japan during her childbearing years. Perhaps she lost a baby, or perhaps she was just walking past?

In most cases a nurse comes from the public health centre to check on newborns just once, and they usually stay for an hour or so. If there is any cause for concern they would probably visit more often, but usually it's just the one visit and after that it's up to the parents to take advantage of what is offered by the health centre and the jidoukan. There is also the 4-month health check which is done at the public health centre and visible abuse could be picked up at that time.
The kind of sad situation described in this article is universal unfortunately, so many articles about similar situations in the newspaper back home as well this year- immature parents and more often step-parents not able to deal with a baby crying and shaking/hitting/throwing them.

What is truly horrific beyond imagination is what happened to the 20,000 people who were killed by the earthquake and tsunami in March 11. To say that the slightly raised risk of cancer we who are still in Tokyo may suffer from is "truly horrific" and "beyond imagination" shows a serious lack of perspective in my opinion.
Anyone who feels like this is definitely better off leaving though as they would certainly worry themselves to death long before cancer got them.

I'm actually surprised they found any soil outside the International Forum in Yurakucho- that is a pretty concreted-over area.

Not all Japanese, just some. And it was the explosion at the nuclear power plant that made people want to buy Geiger counters rather than the government creating a panic situation, surely.

Which ones are those? I haven't heard of anything "unearthed" yet that was a government cover-up. Can you give examples?
