This teacher went overboard and should be disciplined of course, but some of you seem to be forgetting that we are not far removed from a time when the cane or a leather strap were common forms of punishment in schools in our own countries (at least those of us from the UK, NZ and Australia- I don't know about other countries). While bones weren't usually broken, severe bruising and sometimes broken skin did result. The strap and paddle were still used on kids when I was at primary school in the 80s. Saying that this kind of thing is in any way typically Japanese or happens only in Japan is ludicrous.

I'm not really inspired to run down there and buy their clothes. I wonder how Soareak is pronounced?

kirakira25, this photo is of students who will be involved in a particular kind of theatre that emphasises a certain look, so these girls were chosen because they have that look (although I can also see that there are two types here- the ones who will play the men's roles are quite obvious). You are comparing apples and oranges.

Seriously, there is nothing that these girls have to deal with (other than perhaps the insistence on high heeled shoes), that retail staff in other countries don't. As a university student in New Zealand I worked really long hours in retail. There was certainly nowhere for us to "stretch out" other than a small staffroom, which it sounds like they have, folding hundreds of items a day is par for the course if you work in fashion retail- it's basically the main part of the job, and as for complaining about the staffroom being full of people she doesn't know- what a pack of whingers. Welcome to adult life, girls.

Zatoichi was a good one. I also didn't see the ending of the Fight Club coming at all- quite rare for a Hollywood movie.

I agree with ogtob. With 5,000 people running that route just at lunchtime, how long do you think the grass would survive?

PenelopePitstop, read what I read above. You don't get 10m tsunamis, thankfully. Many people were killed by 1m "waves" in the Boxing Day tsunami. A continuous flow of water, even 10cm high, is something noticeable, if not dangerous. It's still a tsunami.

Tsunami waves, even 10cm high, would be noticed basically because they are not waves but a surge of water which keeps coming. Whereas waves break and draw back tsunamis just keep going inland. Wouldn't you notice something out of the ordinary if you lived 100m inland and sea water was going down your street, even if it was just 10cm high? That is what a tsunami is. Every time something like this happens there are always people posting thinking that a tsunami is an ordinary wave and that a 50cm tsunami would be nothing to worry about. No doubt they are the same people who go down to the beach to see them.

You people did hear that Joannie's mother died suddenly earlier this week, right? It's a miracle that she is even on that podium, let alone managing a weak smile.

nisegaijin, people fly with babies all the time without incident. It's very unlikely that anything about the flight caused the child's heart to stop, or we would have heard this kind of thing before, don't you think?

I totally disagree. A major tenet of Buddhism is the concept of compassion, i.e. expressing unconditional love towards others. If you do think Buddhism is about self-serving love, you are going to have to explain such a sweeping statement.

These "Gone with the wind" wedding dresses persist in Japan for some reason even though they've been out of fashion in most western countries since the 80s. The light-coloured suits the guys always wear are gross too- very 70s. Dark suits at weddings look much smarter.

More likely because the neck is uncovered and contains some very important veins and arteries- I doubt the voice has much to do with it, just as I doubt it's a particularly Japanese thing to stab people there. Three kids...that's very sad.

I was going to say, he's 51 years old so it's a good bet he's married, and perhaps his wife was at home? Not big lateral thinkers, some of you.

L'hommequiment, I don't know how much time you've spent in Tokyo, but if it's any time at all you might have noticed that many/most people don't have cars. Also the concept of the designated driver hardly exists in Japan, so your suggestion is impractical. As for alcohol prohibition, never going to happen, so even more impractical.

Aargh, acid-wash just keeps coming back, doesn't it. I was there the first time around (mid 80s), and I don't think we should ever go there again.
