Anybody who thinks the Japanese don't riot needs to have a look at some fairly recent Japanese history. Back in the late 60s and early 70s they were quite good at it- plenty of very violent student protests and rioting over the Chiba farmers having to give up their land for Narita Airport back then. Sure, they've been quiet for a decade or so, but they are definitely capable of it.

We're going to Sapporo this year, but will arrive on the last day of the festival- hopefully there will still be something to see!

So, cactusjack, you would be quite happy to see security guards with shotguns all over Tokyo? I'm personally very happy I live in a country where I don't have to see that kind of thing. I would rather Tiffany got robbed occasionally than have to walk past guards with shotguns when shopping.

Oh, my apologies. I thought Masako was the one who had only girls, and was criticized for it.

She has one daughter. What's that got to do with where she is sitting? Kiko has two daughters and a son, Hisahito, who she is sitting with in the back. I'm assuming Masako's daughter Aiko is sitting behind her, next to Prince Akishino, but is too small to be seen in this photo.

Actually I think that the disapproving person on the left is a man. He's the onlooker in pretty much all the posters in that campaign, and I'm pretty sure he is meant to be a man.

He's on the platform, he hasn't made it onto the train yet.

dolphingirl, they always say how many people were affected by this kind of thing. While it is tragic, it is so common in Tokyo that the companies do have to think of how many passengers were affected and their bottom line- do you know that on average, 1,000 people nationwide per year commit suicide by jumping in front of trains? That's more than 3 a day, and I would guess that a large percentage are in Tokyo. I live on the Chuo line which is particularly badly hit- we had several "jinshinjiko" last week, creating havoc with the trains, and there were a number on other lines as well. Do you expect the train companies to empathise and forget about their profits and schedules every time someone jumps? They have to be concerned about the inconvenience, it's their job to have the trains running. For personal reasons I also empathise with people who commit suicide, and their families, but I don't expect train companies to.

2 year old mom 3 year old son 29 when she got pregnant. Hmm. I wonder if you took a graph, charting the ages of conception of all these nutter moms that kill their kids. I suspect there would be a peak close to the age of 30. Meaning that some of these nutter women had kids for all the wrong reasons, only to find they couldn't cope.

Come on, what an odd thing to say. 29 is a bog-standard normal age to have babies. You will find that the age of conception for all pregnancies peaks at about 30, I would expect, since that's the average age of a pregnant woman these days.

I actually think that you would find that very young mothers are more likely to kill/abuse their babies- more likely to be an unplanned pregnancy, single mother, lower socio-economic group etc. What you said makes no sense whatsoever.

On an unrelated note, I like the use of the word "nappies" instead of "diapers". I'm glad all English language media in Japan doesn't have to be in American.

That's awful- I work in that area, so that could easily have been me. Pretty hard to lose control while driving in that area too- wide straight roads, good visibility, and alcohol isn't mentioned as a factor. Emailing on his cellphone perhaps? Probably unrelated, but you have to wonder, what kind of company is he president of at the age of 24? Or is he perhaps a small business owner? The term company president seems to be applied a bit more generously in Japan than elsewhere.

So that's the lady who designed that tragic kimono and suspenders outfit. She handpicks the girls and the clothes, and I have to say she has odd taste. Quite a number of those girls look like bar hostesses in those outfits, and I agree, many of them don't look very Japanese, although I'm sure they are.

To those who said he wasn't driving carelessly, I disagree. Mistaking the accelerator for the brake is the definition of carelessness, I've never even come close to doing it, although I'm hardly the world's best driver.

I don't think he should be charged though, I'm sure he feels terrible about it enough as it is.

I think we can assume the charge will stick. The "evidence" they have is that she was found beaten and strangled in his apartment, and he bought materials to dispose of the body. Do you honestly think they will let him off because he hasn't admitted to it or because noone saw him do it?

First they send whitebacks to New Zealand, now redbacks to Japan- you can keep your nasty spiders, Australia. Next they'll be exporting their wonderful snakes...

What language is caffe with that accent on the e?

That would be Italian. "Latte" is also Italian, unsurprisingly. If you ever see "Cafe Latte", that's wrong, it's a mixture of Italian and French.

Those sell for 98 yen at my local supermarket- I've just bought one, coincidentally.

Can we just take a reality check here and remind ourselves that this kind of people are a tiny minority in any society? This does not reflect badly on Japanese women, the vast majority of whom are every bit as repelled by Ichihashi as the rest of us. It just tells you that there are weirdoes in every society, but fortunately they are always a minority- to think otherwise is wrong.

They just showed the footage on TV- it wasn't a prolonged bow like Japanese people would do at all, it was very brief- that photo just catches it at its deepest point. As for the comment above saying that "the majority of JT readers criticised", you're wrong. Check out the poll results on the front page and you will see that the majority of JT readers approve of the bow.

I like to laugh at the shows of Africa here where they show dirty refugee camps and unwashed people... As if it were generally any cleaner here!

I hate this kind of ridiculous comment where people compare anything like that in any developed country to a third world country. It's obvious that the person making the comment has never been near a third world country. Try visiting a poorer African country or a Mumbai slum and then come back and tell us if you really think Japan is just as dirty, because I have been to those countries, and I think your comment is laughable.

I see no reason for ANYONE to bow to ANYONE. We are all equals and a simple handshake should do in this day and age.

Techall, that kind of attitude is known as cultural imperialism. You're insisting that Asian cultures should drop their "outmoded" traditions because in your opinion the western equivalent is much better. Bowing incidentally doesn't always have one person bowing lower than the other. Very often people bow as equals.
