Just to add, can I ask why the average Japanese person should be expected to know when WWI, which Japan wasn't involved in, ended? How much Japanese history does the average American know?

I didn't know yesterday was Armistice Day either, because it is not something that is emphasised in my home country (we celebrate Anzac Day- heard of it?.) I wouldn't say however, that that makes me "pretty vague about everything", and neither does it make most people here pretty vague. Some awfully racist comments coming up here.

I think you'll find there are 9 days between Oct 26 and Nov 3, not 14, and October 26 was when she was last seen, not when she was reported missing. For all we know her parents only reported her missing yesterday.

It's not at all rare these days. I think it's rare that they actually arrest anyone for it though.

You couldn't get much more wrong than this, could you. Icewind007, Japanese women not only shave their legs, armpits etc, they also commonly shave their forearms, their eyebrows to tidy them up (there's an ad on TV at the moment where a woman accidentally shaves off her entire eyebrow) and many also shave their faces- I am not kidding, go to any drugstore and look for women's face razors and you will find them. You'll need to find a new theory I'm afraid. If you mean men, my Japanese husband shaves once a day, just like men in most other countries.

Generalisations about "the west" are almost always off somehow. Contrary to what the author claims, Japanese sweet potatoes are almost identical to the kumara sweet potatoes we eat in New Zealand. Dark chocolate and blueberries contain lots of anitoxidants? Not really a newsflash, women's magazines have been telling us that for over a decade now. Bit of a cut and paste job, the nutrition advice here really.

You can't see a new moon sarge, it's the opposite of a full moon. The moon is often a reddish colour when it's low on the horizon- that's just not something you often see in Japanese cities- too many buildings.

Farmboy, they don't know with perfect accuracy what kind of tsunami will arrive. The other option is that they don't issue a warning, and then people are taken by surprise by a larger tsunami than was expected, which can also happen- don't you think it's better to err on the side of caution? Anyone with any intelligence will take all tsunami warnings seriously.

Did some of you people not see the footage of the Boxing Day tsunami? A tsunami is not a wave like you are thinking, it's a constant surge of water that carries all before it, and people died in areas that were hit by a tsunami of not much more than 50cm. Don't think of an ordinary wave- imagine a 50cm high continuous pouring of water towards you, like a river, at quite a fast speed- most people cannot keep their footing in it. That goes on for several minutes. Perhaps better to refrain from making comments if you have no idea what you are talking about.

I'm no fan, but Yon-sama is in no way weedy- he's actually almost ridiculously muscly and it looks odd with his face and glasses- you expect him to be weedy, and he isn't.

bamboohat, you don't have to be talking on a cellphone to be distracted with 3 children under 12 in a car. Of course she will never forget this- what an odd thing to say.

kirakira, why should the place look like a tip after being uninhabited for over a month, if it wasn't a tip beforehand? If no-one has been in there for a month, as you said, what exactly could have happened during that time to make it into a tip? Rotting garbage I can understand, but empty bottles and clothes don't spread themselves over the floor while one is away, and cigarette burns also don't happen by themselves.

I don't know anyone stupid enough to remove the one piece of equipment most likely to save their life in a crash- how on earth can you justify it? Death is preferable to the bruised chest and bump on the head my brother got when he survived a high speed crash that killed the two others in the car who weren't wearing seatbelts? Try telling that to any of the families involved- I know I'm glad my parents drummed into us the need to wear seatbelts. I had no idea there were so many boneheaded people out there. Just incredible.

She speaks very good English, as does he- I heard him yelling at her once on a documentary, and her responding. All those young skaters seem to speak very good English- they do a lot of their training overseas, so they have to really.

It is obvious to anyone with half a brain that this women and child would not have fallen out of the car if they were wearing seatbelts. My brother survived a crash that two others died in because he had his seatbelt on- the other two boys (teenagers) received fatal head injuries from being flung at the windscreen and onto the street by the force of the crash. The police said both would likely have survived if they were wearing seatbelts. Insisting that seatbelts don't help in any way is just ridiculous. The statistics, and common sense, say that seatbelts have saved many lives.

??? Disillusioned, Joseph Fritzl was an Austrian who kept his daughter in a dungeon in Austria as in the article, not Australia, for 24 years, or is that what you are trying to say?
The Australian story is completely separate but there are obvious parallels, hence the reference to the Austrian case.

Given that both women are a head shorter than any of the men in the front row, and presumably too short for the back rows as well, where would you have put them if you were the photographer? I don't see any other option really. And would you have had them wear suits? I think they look fine.

A kid fell out of a window when I was at primary school- he was just messing around, climbing in the window frame, and slipped. Far more likely scenario than an 8-year-old committing suicide, in my opinion. We used to climb trees far higher than that- we would have been history if we had missed our footing. Kids do things like this all the time.
