There's a guy in Musashino-shi in Tokyo who campaigns on a kind of tricycle- he claims he can't afford the vans and loudspeakers. His supporters walk along with him. It certainly gets your attention, far more than the ubiquitous vans.

However Hashimoto sori looks more like Elvis Presley so he shold have been at the event.

He looked more like Elvis perhaps. Hard for him to attend when he died 3 years ago though.

Is the belly supposed to be pointy like that?

Another reason this kind of photo is good- it teaches some people what a normal pregnant woman actually looks like. Yes, her belly is supposed to be like that. At some point the navel basically turns inside out due to the pressure from the growing fetus, and that is what you are seeing there. Totally normal.

womanforwomen, you are confusing this celebrity/drug-related issue with another where an actor called Manabu Oshio was the last person to have spent time with a woman who died of a drug overdose. His wife is Akiko Yada, and she is not missing. Sakai's husband was arrested for drug possession but there is no dead woman involved in this case- just that Sakai and her daughter are missing.

Disillusioned, why should the conductor be dismissed when it is quite obviously the driver who messed up here? The driver knows when the doors are opened and closed, and he left the station without opening the doors! Conductors always step out onto the platform, and that driver pulled away without even waiting for the doors to open and close. I fail to see how anyone could say it was the conductor's fault that the driver left him behind. The driver wasn't paying attention.

This sounds like the driver's fault to me- surely he would have realised that the doors hadn't been opened and closed? The conductors usually step out on arrival at the station, and then the doors open. In this case it sounds like the conductor stepped out and was about to open the door, but the driver took off without waiting.

I disagree- 10 year old kids and 75 year old grannies have cellphones, and unlike Louis Vuitton they cost next to nothing, so how can they be a status symbol? I haven't heard anyone oohing and aahing over my iPhone, every man and his dog has one these days. I agree with presto345- carrying a cellphone is like wearing a watch. Anyone who thinks that they are cool because they have the latest one is still living in 1990.

I really don't get the people who think that anyone would use a cellphone to try and look cool. This is not 1990, and pretty much anyone over the age if 16 no longer thinks that there is anything cool about having a cellphone.

    1) to project the veneer of sophistication, that you are "with it" with this wonderful new technology;

Are you kidding? Cellphones have now been around years, and everyone has one, hardly new technology. I very much doubt anyone in a developed country still thinks that having a cellphone makes them look cool or sophisticated- do you?

I spend a lot of my time on the train emailing people to pass the time, and the suggestion that I or anyone else does that so that other people will think we are cool is just ridiculous.

this is the kind of thing you see on the train every weeken night

What, someone basically not wearing any kind of skirt or pants, just letting their underwear hang out? Not something I've ever seen on a train in Tokyo on a weekend night. Very short skirt, yes. No skirt at all, no. Where do you catch the train?

I'm so pleased. Not that it really matters in the grand of scheme what someone wears at the Miss Universe finals, but that outfit was about the most tasteless thing I have ever seen in my life. Shouldn't something which is supposed to be a national costume be designed by a Japanese person, anyway?

I agree. This kind of thing happens from time to time, not only in Japan, and it is almost always the case that it was a very young, fairly uneducated woman and that the baby was premature. Stillbirth is also a possibility. Some of the girls genuinely do not realise that they are pregnant, or are in a serious state of denial. I am in no way condoning what this mother did, just saying that it was quite unlikely that this baby was fullterm.

Not all women scream while giving birth, that's a stereotype. Also, if this baby was at all premature, which I'm thinking is quite likely, it would have been easier to give birth to without attracting attention.

This new generation of Japanese girls stink, and most are going to the porno industry, degrading there future and morals.

Really? Most of them, as in well over 50% of a generation of Japanese girls are now involved in making porno? That's quite a claim- care to back it up, or were you perhaps...wildly exaggerating?

How do you know what "he" feels "his" identity to be? Or it could have just been a drunk.

Since there is no mention of him being a transsexual, he's still physically a he. If you are not sure which pronoun to use, "he" is probably a better bet than "it".

So she/he only took off it's top?

He, not she, not it. This is just a man in women's clothing. Also it says in the article that he took off his skirt...

Aargh, there is nothing attractive about that outfit at all. I think she is also stepping on the end of her obi with that skyscraper heel, so it's dangerous as well....

This website is aimed at English speakers, right? There might actually be a lot of foreign women reading this site who plan to give birth at some point, whether in Japan or elsewhere. I am personally interested in this book after reading the review. Just because a certain book doesn't interest you, doesn't mean that it shouldn't be included in the book reviews here.

Junkface, I've lived in Japan 11 years, and have not once been asked how much I earn. Neither have I ever heard Japanese people ask that question of each other (my husband is Japanese, so I would have had a very large number of opportunities to hear that question if it was asked.)

I'm afraid I have to confirm that you are wrong there- it would be as rude a question here as it is elsewhere. Cleo is right, your sources are mistaken. Please don't ask someone how much they earn if you ever visit Japan.
